very strange overheating problem

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

I have a very strange overheating problem with my Mk1 1.6l engine:

The engine overheats in any condition (driving or parking). The temperature-sensor in the cylinder head indicates temperatures > 120 degC (verified via ODB-2 and by measuring the voltage at the sensor), but the engine temperature meter in the dashboard does not indicate overheating. The cooling liquid is boiling. I replaced the coolant storage tank cap and the temperature sensor to be on the safe side. I am able to turn on both cooling fans via OBD-2 commands. Boiling stops when they are running. When the engine gets warm, I can notice when the thermostat opens and the 2nd cooling circuit is used. This fault occurred suddenly, without any maintenance involved.

I assume that this is a main computer problem, because the T-sensor and the  actuators (fans) seem to be ok. I cannot imagine that this is related to bubbles in the cooling circuit (a commom problem) or thermostat issues, because the T-sensor in the cylinder head indicates the high temperatures and should control the fan operation, right?

Do you have any suggestion how to fix that or how to identify the bug further?

Thanks a lot and apologizes for my  bad English,

Marty
