Rough running from cold and cutting out!

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone has any ideas what might be going on with my 2011 Focus MK3 Ti-VCT?

When starting for the first time each day over the last few days it has started on the button but it runs really lumpy, no amount of trying to rev it clears and eventually it dies and cuts out. Once its cut out it start first time again with no issue and the engine runs fine!

It's not showing any EML and I've had Forscan Lite running from my ELM327 module on via my iPhone and it has found no error codes either?!

I'd be intrigued if anyone has come across something like this before, as a google search only shows up old MK1 Focus's.

Otherwise, its off to the dealer I go...!

Does it run lumpy when starting whilst the engine is warm? On my 1.6 TDCI it used to start and run lumpy when left after 2 hours but run as normal after being driven for a bit. It never cut out but had no fault codes like you. My problem was that one of the injectors were leaking which would cause the lumpy running on start up as a pool of fuel must of built up in the cylinder.

My 2011 1.6 Ti-VCT started doing this about 3 or 4 months after I bought it (used car last year). My car also started cutting out when stopping at lights or in traffic, I could tell it was going to cut out as a slight dip in the revs happened just before. I found a few threads on here and people recommended a PCM update. I booked it into my local Ford dealer and paid half an hour labour for PCM and any other updates applicable.

There was a massive difference in the car, no more cutting out, felt more power, slightly higher tick over (around 800 vs previous 750).

I have been running it every day since for the last 3 or 4 months with no problems.
