A couple of days ago, while driving over a speed hump, I heard a loud 'twang' noise from the back of the car.   I thought it might be a broken spring.   Over the course of the day, Nottingham being a breeding ground for speed humps, sometimes the noise occurred and sometimes it didn't.   I took the car to a mate of mine, who used to own a garage and still does work for me, and asked him to have a look at it and replace the back springs if necessary.

He said I could pick the car up this morning and I asked him what I owed him   He said nothing.   I said, 'What about the cost of the springs?'   He said that there was nothing wrong with the springs and he'd show me what caused the noise when I got there.

When I arrived he handed me a small stone about three-quarters of an inch square.   It had been sitting in the spring seat and when the spring was extended it got caught between the coils.   Next time I went over a bump it had popped out and made the noise.   It obviously was the problem as, since it was removed, the car hasn't made the noise once.

Well at least it was cheap😀
