57 Plate ST ticking/rattling noise on idle and lift off

Featured Replies

Hi all,

First post here.

Just bought a 57 Plate ST which is completely standard with a full service history. Has 83K on the clock.

It's going in on Wednesday to have a new thermostat fitted as it's stuck open, however I've noticed that it's got a really loud ticking noise when idling and when I lift off between the 3-4k rev range. Seems to be worse the warmer it gets. Sounds like a TDI sucked on a helium balloon.

Had it to the garage today and they're suggesting stuck lifters. They said the movement of the engine when idle shows that at least one of them is missing the cycle. They say they're going to try and solve with a good flush and oil change to begin with before exploring other options. I'm not so sure that'll take care of it. What else should I be looking out for before they begin charging me big money for exploratory surgery?

I thought it could be the chain but then the sound is fairly even spread across the block.

It's disappointing as I'm driving it so carefully at the moment until I get to the bottom of it.
