Hi have purchased a 2016 ford focus zetec with the touch/sync shown below it is the one 

with phone/compass/entertainment and setting don't know what model that is

can you get satnav on phone to play through it or add apps to it etc

any advice gratefully accepted

That's Sync 2 and it doesn't support Apple Play/Google Car apps, so no.  But phone audio output can be played through the car audio.

Current Sync 3 does what you're after, but it's not an easy upgrade as you need to change the actual display, supporting electronic modules and program it all afterwards.

 

Search for a member called Bannko, He'll advise you on how to activate navigation on your head unit.

It terms of adding anything other than Fords own Sync 2 nav option, no. 

It's possible to retro upgrade Sync 2 to add navigation and members like Bannko may be able to help. Officially Ford don't support the retro upgrade but its possible.
