Is this battery compatible with my car?

Featured Replies

Hi all

My car battery appears to be on the way out and after mentioning this to a colleague at work he gave me a near new battery. Can one of you kind folk let me know if it’s compatible? I have attached a photo.

I have a Ford Focus 2006 TDCi MK2.

All I know is that it should be a calcium battery but I’m struggling to find out if this one is or not.

many thanks

Thank you very much. Any recommendation on a particular make?

Also how easy is it to change the battery? It’s situated at the rear passenger side and doesn’t look possible to just lift up without taking other parts out first

If google for 'Trade Club Battery', result is https://tradeclub.com/media/1476/10249_10250_full_battery_guide.pdf.

Most likely, these batteries are Calcium/Calcium, made with so called expanded grid technology, an euphemism for reduced amount of active lead on the electrodes. As a result they last up to two or three years. It's easy to check, just weigh this battery, I expect you measure around 17 kg. So it's good for 2 years max. Beside, no-one makes classic lead-antimony  car batteries today without big advertising. Mostly classic batteries require new lead for electrodes and their price would be high.

Just check at your local 'Trade Club' for more battery details.

the battery is easy to take out and replace, euro recon like 30mins or longer.  it can be taken out and new one fitted in around 5 mins, 10mm spanner, 10mm long nose 1/4". remove holding bracket 2*10mm nuts. loosen the negative at the back 10mm spanner bit awkward, the front of the battery case, unclip wires lift the face and pull towards you this will give you more room. last take off negative and live and pull battery out on a angle this is a tad awkward but it will come out. do the same to replace holding the battery by its sides and slide it in. (easier than taking it out). connect everything back up job done. oh if you wish clean all your connectors whist its out

Incidentally the Varta battery is exactly the same battery as the Bosch S5 (2nd one listed) so I'd save a few quid and buy the Varta.  In fact that's exactly what I did last year!
