Evening ladies and gents, newbie question time.

I've just purchased a 2004 1.8 tdci focus estate in cracking condition with 116000 in the clock.

Question is cam belt or chain? Sorry if this has been asked before but can't navigate the site yet.

Thanks in advance

Dave

This type of 1.8 TDCI has both.

There is a timing chain between the crankshaft and the fuel pump and a timing belt between the fuel pump and the camshaft.

I think its a belt not sure someone should be able to help happy new year:smile:

Ok thanks, I think I'll need to get them done for piece of mind.

Cam belt kit, waterpump, and chain not much change from around 600

2004 will be chain and belt. On these most will only change the belt, I’ve never come across anyone who has replaced the chain.

Pretty simple straight forward job on the 1.8tdci

+1 for the above, I don't recall ever seeing anyone on here over the years changing the lower chain, let alone having any problems with the chain.

I’ve got 120 odd thousand on mine, 12 years old. No intentions of ever replacing it although I will replace the timing belt and tensioner later in the year as I’ve no proof it was ever done. Also the crankshaft oil seal as it’s weeps a tiny amount.
