Coolant burn

Featured Replies

Quick question,

I'm having a new engine fitted by Ford as my old one give up. And they tell me it had a coolant leak. There was No white smoke when I dropped it off with them, but after 24hr of them having it, it turned into a mobile smoke machine.

Now the mechanic says that they can burn the excess coolant off though the exhaust.

Is this correct or does it need a new cat and exhaust.

Thanks in advance

John.

What was the reason for a new engine in the first place?

coolant should not be getting into the combustion side so somethings not right

They didn't say. They just replaced the engine

The last they said was that they suspected that the head had a crack in it.
Then a engineer from ford came to look at it and then said it needed a new engine.

Now they trying to get rid of the white smoke by revving the nuts off it.

I'm sure that doesn't work and they need to replace either the cat or the whole exhaust system??

White smoke Im sure is head gasket failure. Which means engine strip. New engine or old one?

The car is only just 3 yrs old when the engine went, it was still under warranty (just) and when I dropped it off there wasn't any smoke.

Now they have fitted a new engine (so they tell me) and its blowing white smoke out the back.
They are now revving the nuts off it to try and clear the coolant from the exhaust.

My question is, does that even work or will they need to replace the exhaust system.

It works eventually yes, just like when you get condensation in the exhaust on a cold day and you have a bit of smoke till the exhaust warms up and burns it off.

Coolant should burn off quite quickly though. If it was oil in the exhaust I'd contemplate either a good jet wash or next exhaust.

Thank you for that. I just wasn't sure.

ask yourself this, why is there white smoke coming from a acclaimed brand new engine??? hhhhhmmmm  wonders if you still need to run a new engine in...gently for x amount of miles?

I said this, but it's the main dealer that is revving the engine to 2k revs, they say it will clear but I was doubtful.

If the old engine was loosing coolant due to headgasket/head then it's quite possible for all your coolant to dump itself down exhaust Then new engine fitted . Rather than reving it ( which won't get the exhaust hot enough) they should give a road test . Alternatively a new exhaust should be fitted.

Have had similar where a 10 mile hard drive has cleared the smoke.

That's what I was thinking, I should be getting the car bk and sat so let's hope it's sorted by then, I'll let you know why they decided to change the engine and if the smoke has cleared
