Where to put a 12v supply socket in 2005 Mk2?

Featured Replies

On my 2005 Mk2 lowly LX, I have one single power supply socket in the cabin which is permanently live, so pretty useless for any accessories etc as on leaving the car without unplugging them,  the battery would drain. On Tuesday, I'm leaving it into a spark to get an additional 12v socket fitted that's only live with the ignition, but can't decide on the perfect position to install it. Has anyone fitted an extra socket, and more importantly, have a photo? (and even better, installed one and with experience wish they'd chosen somewhere else to locate it?)

Do you not have blank buttons under the ac controls?

Yes, but on measuring one, they appear to be within one mm of the diameter of a 12v socket...

Damn that sucks the only other place I can see where space is available is the change and cup holder areas in the center console or the slot at the rear of it unless you want to drill a hole in the dash.

Was actually thinking of under the dash. Space wise, and ergonomically, it would look fine there. The only downside I can see is that with vibration/gravity, anything plugged in would eventually wiggle it's way out of the socket and become an annoyance LOL

This is just an interior grab off google, but depending on the sparks advice, think I've almost settled on this...

Are you planning to just leave whatever accessories it is plugged in constantly? What is it you are plugging in?

You can put another 12v socket in very easily yourself, I put 2 in my boot and 1 under the glove box.

Yes, leaving in permanently, SatNav, dash-cam, TPMS etc. I'm also getting some DRLs installed, as well as some footwell LEDs - the LX really is very poorly equipped LOL I put my first pair of spotlights in a Datsun 120Y 40 years ago, but am of an age now where I prefer to employ someone who makes a living out of doing stuff like this!

If you're leaving it permanently plugged in then just bury it up under the glovebox.
It's right next to the fusebox so less wiring needed then run the connected item's power cable up the A pillar and onwards to wherever you want it placed.

In theory, that sounds a fine idea, however, trailing a SatNav lead all the way over there, as well as various other c**p I have would be a nightmare! This is the inside of my Merc, I quite like all my 'stuff' to be within reach LOL

Does that move with the seat or stay in place?

  • Author

LOL, it pretty much stays in place, however, as the sole owner/driver, seat never moves! If I do the under dash location on the Focus, I can easily 'velcro' a multi socket onto the side of the console for ease of plugging stuff in...

Settled on here, just perfect for me...
