Keyless start question

Featured Replies

I'll be sorting out my new Fiesta in the coming months and have been trying to find out what happens in a certain scenario regarding keyless start.

At work the last person out of the carpark in a car is responsible for pulling the security posts up before they leave. If I am the last out I jump out of the car with the engine running and pull the posts up (yes I know it's not the most secure way to do this but we are on a national speed limit road in the middle of nowhere).

My question is if I had the key in my pocket with the engine running and got out of the car to pull said posts up does it keep running so when I jump back in i can just go? I only ask as some of the bikes we sell have keyless start and once started if you left the key at home, accidentally I'd assume, and ride off you'd only worry about it once you've turned the engine off.

Yep, exactly the same as the bikes, once the engine is started it won't just switch off by taking the keyfob away for safety reasons.

Depending on how large your car park is, the stop start may cut the engine when you come to a stop though.  It will then need manually restarting after you've opened the door to get out/in.

I'm pretty sure it's the same principle for cars as well. The key must be in the proximity for the first start and will stay on unless you turn off the ignition. I've never driven a keyless entry car before but friend had one and went shopping inside a supermarket once with the engine still running despite being locked.

There is another thread on this somewhere I think. Providing the stop/start is not operating, it will keep running. After an "extended period" of idling  (not defined in the handbook) the car will give you 30 seconds warning and if no action is taken, shut down automatically.

Cheers all.

Won't you get a warning  sound when you get out of the car , mine does which is annoying but at least the engine keeps running.

Yes, you do and a message on the dash to say the key is not in the car.
