Fuel economy mondeo mk4 2.2 tdci

Featured Replies

Dear colleagues,

Recently I am the owner of a mondeo mk4 2012 with a 2.2 TDCI engine that has 200hp. What is your opinion about fuel consumption? I went through the city, it was pretty bussy also but not exaggerated, and the car computer shows me 12.7 liters / 100km. Is it normal consumption or should I check something at the car? Also going outside the city the car computers show 9.6 liters / 100km. Outside it means i drove about 10km with a continuous speed of 60 km/hour at ~2500 rpm, to mention that the water temperature was at 90 degrees Celsius.

The lowest fuel consumption i could get was 8.6 liters / 100km going outside the city with 70-80 km / h and changing the gears to 2000 rpm.

Seems about right though i normally work in Gallons and MPG  your figures sugest about 32 mpg out of town which is about what mine did well i got 35

Outside the city, the car shows you 35 uk mpg ?

I converted my fuel consumption in uk mpg are here it looks:

- in town 22,3 mpg

- outside of town 29,12 mpg, 2000-2700 rpm, with the maximum speed between 37-43 miles per hour.

In my town the traffic is like in London.

So ? What do you think ? Does the car have a problem ?

I think its about the same as mine was it will be a bit better at a slightly higher speed ate you sure about the rpm because I remember that 2200 was about 75mph or was that in lower gears.

By "Out of town" did you mean "motorway"?

I ask because I had my eye on getting one of these when my MK2 Focus finally craps out and dies but seeing as my 1.8 TDCi is currently doing 57-58 MPG (brim to brim) on a steady 1 hour commute, a 45% drop in MPG would be far too low for me to put up with.

Mine has averaged 40mpg over 5 years, but my commute is only 30 mins and consists of a mix of mainly B roads with some A and town roads, though normally moving all the time. I do drive enthusiastically when possible 😉

If I drive sensibly on a run then it will go up to about 44mpg.

If stuck in heavy stop/go traffic then it can go as low as 34mpg (averaged out over the whole tank)

Oh my, I get between 20-25mpg around town in stop-start traffic but 30-35mpg if on a motorway cruise (38mpg if I drive very sensibly)

But, that's with a 295bhp 2.5t petrol. Honestly thought that the 2.2tdci would have been far more economical.

I think I'll be going to the 2.0 TDCi then, for the commute I make for work (1 hour each way and 45 mins of it is motorway) a drop from nearly 60 MPG to 45 MPG would be a bit painful on the wallet.  On the flip side "what a machine" and could I get addicted to the sheer grunt (YES).   I suspect when the time comes, if I end up in front of a "looked after" example in a good colour, I'll probably still drop the £££, just for the sheer smile it'll put on my face every day I drive it (or even look at it begging to be thrashed).

When I did my research 6 years ago, I was only considering the TXS, the 2.0 (163ps) didn't seem that great on fuel in the real world and the 2.2 (200ps) was slightly worse...so I went for the 2.2 for the extra power and torque. Additionally the 2.2 came with twin exhaust pipes 😀. My previous car was a ST24 (2.5 V6 170ps) which was converted to LPG and so long as I got 38 mpg from the diesel, then it was comparable in costs(based on diesel costing 6 or 7 pence per litre more than unleaded at the time, and LPG was even cheaper)

I think some people get better mpg than me because they do longer journeys, but not 57 mpg based on a fill to fill calculation...that would be 814 miles on 65 litres of fuel!! (70 litre tank on the MK4/4.5)...I got 650 miles from a tank, once!

I've only driven the 2.0 (163ps) in a Kuga and that seems to pick up quite well but runs out of puff too soon. The 2.2 seems to pick up a bit slower (on 19" wheels) but my word the torque is addictive. on my 18" winter wheels it does pick up a bit quicker. I got 34 mpg a couple of tanks ago...but it was enjoyable 😉😀

Torque (and lots of it) is definitely addictive, driving a N/A petrol feels sluggish by comparison (at sensible engine sizes i.e. up to 2 litres displacement).  As long as I could get around 50 MPG on a good motorway run (my current commute), I'd be very happy, especially when I consider the benefits over my MK2 Focus 1.8 TDCi i.e:

  • POWER! :taz:
  • Smoother engine
  • Heated seats
  • The looks
  • The handling
  • Less wind noise (MK2/2.5's are a pain for noise from the wing mirror area)

Did I mention the looks? :winkiss: ....I'm also leaning towards the 2.2 TDCi, partly for the twin tail pipes (although looks aren't the most important thing for me, it does still matter if I'm looking at spending ££££ on a car that I'd be planning on keeping for at least 5 years) as well as the huge amount of extra torque it delivers over the 2.0 TDCi. :driving:

Hi, I saw your post here

https://talkford.com/community/topic/314066-dpf-error-code-p2463/

My Ford Mondeo 2010 Diesel Automatic giving me the same error code and EML is on, also MOT soon.

I need urgent help from you. EML was intermittent but now continuous. Yes I was not driving much in motorway. Read the DTC and got code P244C - Catalyst temperature too low during regeneration, bank 1. Now showing fault code p2463(97). I already changed the DPF fuel injector with a mechanic, found previous one was blocked. But still the EML on and giving me new fault code P2463. What's wrong with it. Do you think driving in motorway for long time will solve this problem? Please help.

Do you clear the DTC code after you changed the injectors? and then got a new code or not?

Always worth clearing the code after you done a fix it forces the ECU to check everything again and it might give you the same code again or a new one that will point to a different issue

p244c - Catalyst Temperature Too Low During Regeneration, Bank 1

p2463 - Diesel Particulate Filter - Soot Accumulation

It sounds like your regen is not working as it should.  Best thing to do it go for a 40 min run and keep the revs around 3000rpm. The book will say lower revs and shorter time. But with the higher revs and then longer time should force a regen and make it hot enough to do it.
If not you may need to take it to a diesel specialist and then can take the Cat off and clean it for you
