Mk7 fiesta 1.4tdci smoke

Featured Replies

  1. Hi there new to the forum,

just boughty my misses a little 2010 mk 7 1.4Tdci fiesta as a run around the resonan we bought this car was for its low  road tax and good mpg. Now we  have a slight issue and was  wondering if anyone could help on the matter? Every  first start mainly in the mornings it  struggles to turn over and we get  cloud of smoke from the back! Then it will run fine all day! Trying to post a video to help! Thanks in  Advance

Hello Fuller1301

I would check glow plugs/relay.

In the morning engine is cold and they should help you easy start but when they are not working properly you will struggle to start and will create lot of smoke.

If you want to do it by your self check:

My advice check them first!

I can not be 100% certain but if injector seals were leaking I think you would get smell of burning diesel when hot. fuel comes past the seals and collects in a pool around the injector. the pool then cooks and turns into a black goo and then ash, and smelling whilst it does that. When I read your first message I was thinking it sounded most likely glow plug problem. But can you live with it?  I don't know how much it would cost and if it's just one faulty glow plug or worse. And they have been known to snap off when undoing them which of course is a disaster. If you can still use the car I might be tempted to just live with it.

also, I wonder if the slow turning of the starter motor is a separate issue. eg. a less then perfect battery. Diesels have higher compression than petrol than need a better battery to turn the starter motor. Coupled with the fact that glow plugs use a lot of electrical power which also means the battery needs to be even better to power the starter motor at the same time as powering the glow plugs. So I wonder if battery is old or if someone has put a small lower power one in there. Lower AH and lower CCA rating.

Thanks for ur  reply! I’m kind of hopping it’s a plug and  battery issue! The car is under warranty but would they cover me for a glow plug Issue?  Worth a try I guess 😏

if you bought it from a dealer they should be responsible for any issue that existed when you bought it if these faults were not pointed out and accepted by you
