Breakdown Cover (again...)

Featured Replies

Morning all,

My breakdown cover is up for renewal.  I've been fully intending to go with a smaller company such as StartRescue this year.  I can't really afford more than £50 for it this time.  However, it's been brought to my attention that even with 'nationwide recovery', most of these smaller places won't take you to a destination of your choice!! 😮 They'll take you to either; your home, your destination OR a garage, whichever is nearest...with the amount of garages around, this more than likely means a garage will be the nearest place.

This is no good for me, all I want is the car to be brought home from anywhere in the UK regardless of distance.  AA & RAC offer this, but can anyone confirm others that do?  The wording on the websites isn't clear in most cases...unless I'm just getting daft in my old age lol.

I inevitably turn to Martin Lewis for advice on these kind of matters, check out this page on Money Saving Expert.

Yeah, I often use the MSE site as well but it doesn't help in this case.  Just says that AA & RAC offer recovery to anywhere which I already know.  It doesn't even mention if Greenflag offer the same or just the nearest garage.

I am with StartRescue and my Focus had an immobiliser fault about a month ago while I was at my parents home in Liverpool. The type of fault meant that the car should not be driven so they agreed to tow me back to my home address, which is a little bit past Inverness. There was no issue at all, they asked me what I wanted and just said they would do it. I have their top package which is dirt cheap, not sure how much I paid for it.

I just checked, I actually have the 3 Star cover and it cost me £25.

The higher level cover gave European cover and also driver illness cover, neither of which I needed.

The wording in the policy booklet says this about National Recovery;
“ Nationwide Recovery.
If the vehicle cannot be repaired within the same working day in accordance with One Star cover, we will arrange for the vehicle, you and the passengers to be recovered to your home address, or if you would prefer and it is closer, your preferred destination within the territorial limits (UK)”

So if your destination is closer than your home address then you can choose to go to there, if not then they will take you home.

I don't need homestart so was looking at level 2.  The wording on their website says this:

Is that just poorly worded?  A garage will almost always be nearer than either home or the destination!

This is from the policy booklet....

plus, a current 15% discount code 😉 MVC58481599A

Ooh, I do like a discount! 😉

How long is that code available for?  It might be next week before I make a decision...

Also waiting for a top cashback payout though, using last year's AA cashback to pay for this year's cover lol.

Should be good for a while yet, haha using the AA cashback to pay their competition
