MK2 facelift 1.6 tdci 6 speed gearbox

Featured Replies

Hi

Im looking for something cheap, reliable and economical. Sounds like a fairytale, but with Ford focus 1.6 diesel it can be reality . Only thing what i cant  get my head around is gearbox. Ideally i would want 6 gear gearbox. How popular it is in 1.6 diesel version ?and does it even come with this engine?  Cheers for info in advance.

No, the 1.6TDCi never came with a 6 speed gearbox on the Mk2.5.  It's also well known for being an unreliable engine, full of potential common faults lol.

There aren't any engines that are cheap, reliable and economical, you have to pick two of those things.

Both the 1.8TDCI and 2.0TDCI come with a 6 speed gearbox.

Personally I'd suggest the 2.0 TDCI for reliability, but they aren't particularly good on fuel, the tax is high and they cost more to buy.  They also come with a DPF so not good if you do short journeys.  The 1.8TDCi doesn't come with a DPF, but can have injector faults and is fairly unrefined, again high tax and the fuel economy isn't anywhere near the 1.6's.

1.8 TDCi is only 5 speed on the Focus and Ford mucked up a bulletproof design 2008 onwards changing the lower chain to a belt in addition to Siemens supplying a massive batch of substandard injectors.  My 2005 1.8 TDCi is currently at 162K miles and original clutch, DMF, fuel pump, injectors and turbo (thankfully no DPF to worry about) but it's not very refined but can do 56-59 MPG on a steady long run when in good working order.

Personally I'd say to go for the 2.0 TDCi as long as you can find an example without a DPF, it was an option for the 2.0 TDCi on the MK2 Focus so isn't always fitted.  When fitted it can cause problems because the system is the 1st generation Peugeot system that needed some ridiculous fluid to help increase the exhaust temps to help regeneration, the new (cDPF) systems don't need this and are massively more reliable as a result.

Enough said about the 1.6 TDCi in the MK2.....AVOID, it's :shit:

Last time I mentioned this I'm sure someone corrected me on it, saying they were 6 speed! 🤦‍♂️  Unless it was the 1.8TDCi C-Max that was 6sp?

Lol, it's the same box (MTX75) as the 1.6 TDCi although I'm not sure if the ratios are exactly the same.  The S-Max and Mondeo got the 6 speed box, I guess because Ford thought that the  10 BHP increase in engine output warranted it, the Focus based models such as the C-Max got the 5 speed MTX75 and 113 BHP.

Is the 5 speed mtx75 a straight swap for the 6 speed

Good day everyone

Will a 2lt tdci 6 speed gearbox fit on a normal 1.6 ford focus that has a 5 speed gearbox?

No it will not fit.

The only 6-Speed gearbox is a relative easy fit to the the MK2/MK2.5 1.6 TDCI is the Ford/Getrag B6 gearbox that is used on the Focus MK3 1.6 TDCI. This however requires loads of custom made parts like driveshafts, gearbox mounts and flywheel and clutch. If the car has Cruise Control it will stop working because the gear ratios will no longer match.
