Strange problem with mother's Citroen...

Featured Replies

About 6 months ago my mother's 1994 Citroen AX 1.5 diesel developed a problem whereby every time you started the engine the battery light would stay on solid, then when you revved the engine to about 3,000RPM it would go out and stay out until you shut it off again.  After a few weeks of ignoring the problem (at least I'm honest!) the battery died and as it was old anyway, I replaced it, then lo and behold the problem went away!  Thinking it was somehow the battery at fault, or a loose connection that I inadvertently tightened when fitting the new battery, I forgot about it.

But recently it has come back, not as bad as before, but now it charges fine when started from cold (straight from idle, no revving required), but when you shut it off after a long-ish drive and restart within 10-15 minutes, the battery light flickers and only goes off when revved, but then flickers again when the engine drops to idle.  If you leave the engine off for about 30 minutes to cool down, then restart it goes out straight away.

Maybe I'm being thick but this doesn't sound typical for any type of charging fault does it?  I doubt it is the belt as the tension is correct and there is no squealing.

The prime suspect in my opinion is the voltage regulator, but would that be normal for a dodgy regulator to be "cured" by a new battery than slowly become an issue again?
