Trailer tyres - legal question!

Featured Replies

I am picking up a small trailer next week and before I tow it away I will obviously check it over to make sure it is safe to tow (even though the owner assures me it is), and of course one thing I'd check is the tyres and the tread thereof, which got me thinking...  Are trailers subject to the same tyre laws as cars in terms of having to have a minimum of 1.6mm of tread over 2/3 of the tyre?

From the pictures it seems to and I will confirm that before I tow it, and if it doesn't I will either swap them over or put it on my bigger trailer, but as a hypothetical situation it piqued my curiosity.

Yes, anything you tow (trailer, caravan etc) must all have a minimum depth of 1.6mm in an even band across the central 3/4s.

Though as small trailers don't do any turning, braking, and don't have any torque pushed through them they take forever to wear anyway!
