Mk3 clunking noise at low speed

Featured Replies

I have a low speed clunking noise from my Mk3 1.6 EB. Notice it more if the car is warm and it's a sound which is consistent with the speed of the wheels. Only happens when I'm braking at about 10mph and below and it sounds like the wheel or brake disc is catching at the same point for each turn. It does disappear for a while after an 'exuberant' stop. I've taken the wheel off and had a look around. Can't feel any movement in the suspension arms or anything like that and no real movement of the brake disc. It's definitely coming from the front and would probably say it's coming from the driver's side but might be coming from both sides, just easier to hear from my side.

There's also a hollow sort of sounding noise on rough surfaces which may well be the same issue but the quick up and down movement exaggerates the noise which might doesn't really make itself known without using the brakes.

Car has done just over 75000 miles and the brake discs were said to be only about 20% worn in May but have so far been on the car for a good 20000 miles so we're really easy on brakes.

Low speed clunking would be the swaybar links check the rubbers for deterioration when the rubber is gone they resonate through the struts. Although have also seen peeps having issues with MK3 engine mounts too so check the rubbers on them too.
