red diesel

Featured Replies

my mates daft lass has stuck red diesel in her golf sdi will this run ok  just because her brother in law uses it told her if she gets dip she might get her car took of her

It will run ok yes but yes, it's illegal.

also will have an impact on a dpf if fitted

SDI's don't have a DPF.  They're horrible archaic non-turbo diesels lol, worth about 50p so I wouldn't worry about having it taken.  I'd be more worried about the massive fine.

I've seen mixed results from people running red, I thought it was the same as white but without the additives, though some people do suffer engine faults from it and it can't all be coincidence.

Depending on which SDI it is, she could run it on veg oil for low fuel costs, later ones suffer ring gumming though.

Also to note that the tests they use can detect very low levels of red in the fuel system, probably best to run it right empty then rinse and repeat a few times.

And don't do it again! [emoji39]

I cheers lads its a golf 2.0 sdi on a 05 plate that's all I no,,i was running a pug 405 many years ago on red never had any probs got pulled in to a layby by a county car seen him bending at the back of car, then I said that's me done then comes to me and said your tyre tread is a bit low,,after that day never used it again

The dye in red diesel is very persistent and will show up on filters plus there is a chemical marker that will show up for quite a while after use.

If she's pulled & tested and any red shows up then the car will be siezed for HMRC inspection.

It's a big fine plus forfeiture of the car.

I get it used up then run the white in it you should be ok if you dont tell anyone you cant trust  ☺️

Can someone tell me what red diesel is and the legality of it 😅

In Northern Ireland it is dyed green and there was a big spate of farms being used to process green diesel to remove dyes and markers then the fuel being sold from fuel tanks in farmyards to taxi drivers for a large discount as compared to white diesel.

Processing of red or green diesel involves very nasty chemicals that leave waste products which usually end up being dumped or fly-tipped causing pollution of water courses and rural areas.

I guess you won't have come across the term much living in the city? Very common issue in agricultural areas, where people have legitimate reasons for using red diesel but may be tempted to the dark side. I often see/hear of tanks being dipped by the authorities at livestock markets etc, where large numbers of farmers gather in their Landies (or increasingly, Isuzu/Mitsubishi/Toyota pick-ups).

Excise Notice 75 (which you can find on the Gov.uk website) gives full details of vehicles which may use red diesel and in what circumstances.
