MK 2.5 conversion 1.8 petrol to 2.5

Featured Replies

Good day guys,

Need your input and good advice. Love my 2010 mk2.5 focus 1.8 petrol zetec trim but i want more power. Thought about a turbo kit but of course heat and other factors involved. What I'm really interested in is if it's possible installing a US Ford Fusion(Mondeo) 2.5 duratec and 6sp transmission. Being I'm close proximity to the US (I'm in Jamaica), I can get a good mileage engine and box for under $1000usd. I've seen this work done with US focus with success. Can the same be done with my UK model focus? Basically the engines are similar (2012 to 2014 uses the ETB) but these are the questions i have.

1.Will the immobilzer be a problem and if it can be reprogrammed?

2. Will the original ECU need to be changed or it can be used?

3. Would I need the 2.5 axles?

4. What about sensors?

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Anything?

You're not likely to get much on here, as those kind of modifications in the UK are frowned upon by the insurance companies i.e. most companies over here would refuse to insure you and the few that would be willing would charge ££££££ for the privilege.  As a result it's unlikely anyone on here has ever attempted it.

Yes, in the UK it would  probably be cheaper (and a heck of a lot easier) to swap your "normal" Focus for an ST. (Though knowing what folks on here have attempted, someone may be along in a minute.........!😀)

Wouldn't bother with this modification you will ruin the car.  Change it for an st.

Taking al what;s being said into consideration...a ST would overall better than doing any swap mods?

In don't know the two cars in detail, but engine swaps tend not to just involve the engine & gearbox/transmission.

ECU, would need the programming for the 2.5 (assuming it even is the same ECU system), and need to be set for those sensors, so it's unlikely the 1.8 would be of any use, the wiring harness may not even be the same (manufacturers try and make them generic, but things like the ST can be the ones where parts are not generic. Things like brakes are normally different (bigger) on the more powerful engines, suspension components are different and needs better control of the grip to make use of the extra power (the engine is likely heavier so springs are normally stiffer). Then it's ancillaries such as exhaust, sometimes fuel tank (if one has a different pump arrangement to the other), brake master cylinder, clutch master cylinder .. the list goes on.

In short, an engine swap from  "average" to "high" performance is a big job, unless you are prepared to have an engine with more power that is still woefully short in every other sense when compared to the car that left the factory with that type of engine. It would be a good outcome if it was something like taking a written-off (total loss) car with the higher performance, and using the body/shell of a lower power car.
