S-max manual gearbox whine

Featured Replies

Hello,

I have a 2014 Ford S-max 2.0 diesel with a 6 speed manual gearbox. I bought 2 years ago at 64k. Now at 123k 90% motorway driving and driven fairly gently. Still on original gearbox, clutch, flywheel and drive train.

It has started making a bearing like whine. This is related to engine speed not road speed. It goes away when the clutch is pressed down regardless of whether in gear or not. It goes away when the clutch is released and coasting in neutral. It is present when accelerating and decelerating. It is more prominent in first gear and the noise reduces but is still present in the other 5 gears.

I have been told that as it is not present when in gear with the clutch pressed it can't be the lay shaft and as it is related to engine speed not road speed it can't be after that so must be between the lay shaft and engine making it the clutch.

Does anyone think that this sounds correct or have any other ideas what it could be?

Massive thank you to anyone that can offer any advice or support.

Most definitely a clutch, thrust bearing  or crankshaft thrust shim issue.
