Steering lock malfunction

Featured Replies

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has come across this issue before.

I own a 2018 Ford Fiesta, and when trying to start my car, I am greeted with a message saying “steering lock malfunction - service now”.

This occurred after we jump started the car, as it seemed the battery had gone flat, as the key would not interact with the car and it would not start. The car started when being jumped however the steering lock remained on. We left the car running for a while to charge the battery and then turned it off. The key would again not connect, and the ignition would not turn on and then the fault message occurred. The key has now randomly started working again, but the car still does not start.

any suggestions or help?

Hi Josh, yes I've had it when my battery was disconnected to fix a dashboard fault.

When the battery was reconnected I got the steering lock malfunction.

Called the AA out and he showed me how to pull the Body Control Unit (BCU).

It's a black box just to the right of the battery.  The AA guy said just to unplug it then plug it back in.

It cleared the fault immediately.

No doubt I'm tempting fate here, but mine is continuing to fire up first touch of the button despite virtually nil usage. I am checking the battery voltage frequently and have had the charger on a couple of times since lockdown started. I always kill the start/stop system as soon as I start the car - other than that can't think of anything else I may be doing differently.

I think charging the battery a couple of times during the last month would be pretty effective at warding off a problem Roger m8.  I've been disabling the S/S too for the last year knowing I was doing short trips.  I'm continuing to do 45+ mins shopping trips every 5/6 days, I've even disabled the auto-fold on the mirrors lol

I'm just shocked that by far the majority of posts on here regarding dead batteries are not for older cars, but instead the newest and greatest MK8.

Yes, I'm not clear what the big difference is compared to older cars, unless it's the "smart" charging systems these days as mentioned in other threads. My Mrs's car,  which has only done 8k in 6 years, has shown no sign of a battery problem. I have given it a precautionary charge since lockdown though, when she's been doing even less mileage than usual, difficult though that is!😀
