Should i buy need advice?

Featured Replies

Looking for advice
I'm looking to buy a 2015 Focus ST3
The only issue is its had 5 owners which does worry me
and that its cat d
The current owner didnt do the damage but he was told when he brought it that it was passenger side wing damage "light"
So i've got a mechanic booked to check it over
and the price is 9.1k to buy the car
Im not planning to sell it on but I do worry down the line if i was to sell it would i take a massive hit, lets say 2 years time its at 32k miles and i only put 10k miles on would I still be able to sell a high specced cat d st3 for at least 8k 8.5k?
Anyone here brought a cat d car before, I've never done it before and do feel nervous, Would like to hear some of oyur stories and what you would do
Because another fear is i buy it for 9.1k and then 2 years time its worth 5k with low milage but I doubt that would happen?

The only thing that would concern me is the asking price, it's far too high for a declared category accident repaired vehicle, even if it's relatively low mileage and only 5 years old, I would value it at around 4k to 5k and that is providing it comes with the printed matter to prove that it has been repaired to an acceptable standard and has had no issues since the repair. Inspect the repair, make sure that the shut lines are correct and any inner panels have been repaired or replaced properly and everything is in-line and looking straight. Go on the DVLA vehicle check site and do an MOT history search. It takes very little for an insurance Company to write off an accident damaged vehicle nowadays but you should always be cautious as there are a number of vehicles on the road that have been repaired very cheaply and when you come to insure it your insurance Company could well want to inspect it, if the car has been recorded and repaired properly there will be a paper trail and your insurers will know the cars history. Having said all that, have a read of this, it may help you make up your mind.

I've bought a few Cat D's as breakers and currently own a cat N car...it's been the most reliable car I've owned annoyingly!  It's absolutely worthless though, and no-one wants to buy it or even allow me to PX it.

If this one is cat D it must've been damaged before 2017, meaning it was still very new and valued highly at the time.  Would've had to be more than light panel damage to write off a ~2 year old ST3!!  The problem with Cat D (that has been rectified with the new cat N/S status) is that you don't know whether there was any structural damage or not under the old system.

Also, there's no way you'd only lose £600 in depreciation on any 2015 Focus over 2 years, you'll be looking at more like a grand a year at the very least, and write offs technically depreciate more than normal cars as they're harder to sell so you end up dropping the price just to get rid, it's a buyers market unless it's a very rare car.

Should you buy it?  Yeah, if it's the car you want, seems well repaired (but don't expect perfection!) and has decent history then go for it.  But if you're worried about selling it on soon, a cat car is not for you I'm afraid!

So its got a full service history, I have a mechanic booked in today to do a full inspection of the car, he'll test drive, plug it in, full body check check the underneath too, If he says all is well is it worth getting

9.1k is expensive for a cat D Fiesta ST that's 5 years old. You can get an ST without the salvage title for a shade under 10k now...

You'll never get 8.5k for a mint Fiesta ST in 2 years time, nevermind one that's been crashed. Be lucky to get 6k trade in for it. Maybe get 7k if you sold private but it will take ages as nobody wants a Cat D car with 5+ owners.

5 owners in 5 years is a little concern. Generally means the owners didn't take care of it as they knew they would be getting rid soon (not letting the car warm up/cool down, cheapo tyres, non genuine parts are the most common ones).
