Focus Titanium MK 3.5 - Dead screen?

Featured Replies

It has been slowly building up for a while now but my centre screen now has so many lines on it that the infotainment system is completely unusable

Any ideas on how to fix it or what to replace? I've tried disconnecting the battery but had no luck

Bump, hoping someone will know something about this because the Ford garage didn't!

Looks like a dead/broken GPU, you'll probably have to replace whatever is the controller (can't remember what it's called, APIM?). If it was a Sync 2 system might be time to do an upgrade to Sync 3, or acquire a Sync 3 system and copy your settings across with Forscan.

I think it's sync 1? It looks like this when working

OK, you'll probably pick up a replacement unit fairly cheap from a scrappy. I'm going by my own experience with computers when you see a display like that tends to be either the LCD failed or the GPU, and the former is usually only from impact damage and radiates from a specific point. Not sure if you can upgrade to Sync 2 as I've heard it's a lot more involved than going from 2 to 3. You could do a full reset and/or firmware update, though I'd have hoped that the garage would have done this as a get out of jail free card before anything else.

Don't know much about Sync 1 to be fair though, as I jumped to Sync 2 and have used Sync 3. Hopefully that helps.

Before you I knew absolutely nothing about the problem so you're helping more than you can imagine! What would you look to replace? The display, the APIM it's connected to or the whole unit? I'm not too sure what I'd be looking for

Going by what I've seen for Sync 2 and Sync 3, it's probably best to get the APIM/Display as I don't think there's much price difference when buying second hand and would give you spares to swap if need be. It'd be the route I'd take as you could always sell on what you didn't use or keep just in case.

It also might be worth talking to a few garages and see what they suggest as there might be other options to replace the unit with something better. I believe Kenwood had some head units.

Would I just pull it out and look for the part number then? Also how much would the upgrade cost, I looked at a Sync 2 upgrade and it was quoting $1500 which is just insane, I only paid £5k for the car! Are kenwoods similar in price?

No idea, I just saw in groups that Kenwood was an option. Wasn't paying too much attention to it and can't find the original post, was looking for a Sync 2 to Sync 3 conversion at the time.

If you want either Sync 2 or 3. I have both systems for sale. Send me a PM if you’re interested. They’re also a lot cheaper than what you’ve been quoted!

The screen and the sync units come separate, this is a sync 1 unit and the screens do fault, I have replaced quite a few for various issues. Usually they just stop working and go black. Try getting another screen and see if it fixes it
