iPhone and BAD MEDIA message

I have a 2012 Ford KA with USB and have always used my iPhone to listen to Spotify and Audible when in the car. The past few days I've been plugging it into the USB, the music starts playing then the radio beeps and it goes silent with a BAD MEDIA message showing on the radio display. I remember this happened when I first got the car and I can't remember how I fixed it but it hasn't happened again until now. Does anyone have any solutions that won't cost the earth?
