Ford Focus MK2 ECU Programming

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have a MK2 Focus 2.0 petrol, which from factory had no A/C. I wanted A/C so I fitted it, and it almost works, the system is fully operational and all components installed, it's gassed up (perfectly), and produces cold air when you power up the compressor manually. The issue is however, the ECU is not commanding the relay to come on. I've tested everything, and it all works but the ECU just won't ground the relay.

I've ordered a VCM2 clone to use with IDS as ForScan and ElmConfig aren't capable of doing this, but I'm hoping someone can guide me on how to do such a thing with IDS as there appears to be little online in the way of programming tutorials, only new module coding. Also if anyone is reasonably local to London/Essex and has IDS, your help could be compensated should you wish!

Thanks!
Michael

I'm wondering if you can go into central car configuration and tell the vehicle if it has A/C, I'd need to know the options that are available under module programming

I’m sure you can do this with foccus or how ever it’s spelt on the mk3, you can even change the size of tyre on the drop down to compensate for speed etc.

Never used it on a mk2 but I know on the mk3’s you can change pretty much everything using that foccus software. I changed a headlight value so it keeps a constant 12v to the bulb holders for better stability and no flickering for LED Bulbs.

What an amazing upgrade, to install A/C where none existed before! I've seen loads of 'how to' on cruise controls, reversing cameras, head units etc, but never A/C, well done buddy, hope you get it fully sorted! 😎

The FoCCCus software is designed for the Focus Mk3 only. It will not work on a Focus MK2/MK2.5.

The following procedure should work:

Using Ford IDS NonCom procedure:

* Find yourself a VIN number of a vehicle of the same production Month, same engine and same options as your car but with A/C.
* Turn the ignition OFF and try to communicate with the car.
* The IDS software can (obviously) not connect and will ask you to swith the ignition to ON. Proceed with the ignition OFF (very important).
* After a few attempts the IDS software will offer to enter a PCM part number or PCM Tear Tag number. Enter the correct number and proceed.
* Go to the PCM replacement function. Proceed with the ignition OFF (very important).
* In case the IDS software asks iwhether the old PCM is available choose NO.
* The IDS software will ask to enter a VIN number. Enter the VIN number of the vehicle with A/C.
* The IDS software will download the PCM configuration settings from the Ford servers. Before the programs starts programming the PCM the ignition must be switched ON.

This way the IDS software will reprogram the PCM with the configuration setting of a car with A/C.

I was hoping you might see this one! You seem to be very clued up. Anyways, before I proceed I'd like to confirm I know exactly what I'm doing. On step 4, what do you mean the correct part number? Which part number am I using? Will it vary from my car to the "donor" car? Thank you in advance

Further, for anyone who has a 2005 focus 2.0 petrol with a/c and would like to offer their vin in PM I'd be highly grateful, I'm finding it quite hard to find one as the 2.0 is quite rare.

When using the NonCom procedure (ignition switched OFF) the Ford IDS system is not able to identify the vehicle. By entering the PCM part number or tear tag number the Ford IDS system is able to identify the vehicle. This procedure is alos used when the PCM is defective or not accesible for whatever reason.

A 2005 Focus MK2 with the 2.0 Duratec HE engine should have a Visteon ESU-121 PCM. The part number and tear tag number are printed on a sticker on the PCM.

The picture above for example shows an ESU-121 PCM with part number 3M51-12A650-GD and tear tag number 4ARD. Both your car and the donor car (with A/C) must have the excact same PCM part number/tear tag number.

Another possibility to obtain the PCM part number is by diagnosing the PCM using a suitible diagnostic system that shows part and software version numbers. For example the ELMconfig program or Forscan program and an ELM327 interface.

@JW1982 Thanks for the reply. I'm not sure if i'm doing it right. I've found a couple VINs that seem like they should be a good match, I've gone through the procedure as you described. All went well, the car is still operating properly, however I still have no A/C and now have the wrong VIN in the ECU (not the end of the world, it's easy enough to revert). Apologies for any stupidity, I've done a tiny bit of programming before but never touched IDS.

I thought I'd provide an update on this. I've now got fully functional Air Con fitted in my car, and I can't tell you how over the moon I am on being able to freeze my toes off lol. Anyways, through some research of my own, my colleague, and contacting a trade friend who was a ford master tech around the time these cars were made, I figured out what was needed. I needed to replace the PCM, and GEM with parts from a model fitted with AC. The car I stripped all the AC parts from still had the PCM and GEM, so I was going to take them and fit them, but the ECU was of the newer type and thus not compatible. I was able to use the GEM module however, and the PCM I took a 150 mile round trip to source. Once I fitted the new PCM and programmed the PATS, the GEM module popped in with no programming necessary. Flick the key and woohoo!  Cold air. Pop IDS on to data logger and monitor live data, everything is operating exactly as expected. As a plus the GEM module from the donor car came with 2 keys, so I now have 3 keys, and a couple replacement blades on the way.

Thanks JW for your advice, but I was clutching at straws trying to program it, it seems that ford never made that an option as AC is a very rare retrofit (i'll be surprised if I hear of someone else doing it). I was asking a bit too much on the programming front. Either way, it's all done now!

I'd be shocked senseless if someone else had done what you just did! Congrats on the retrofit, and enjoy the icy air!

would eml config and the engine maps he list not do the job?

the variable AC compressor links to the engine ecu, so I think I get why it would need to be changed

attached will be hard work as this site doesn't support excel     http://civil.iffc.ru/
