On a Focus MK1 (1.8) saloon

Which way do I turn the centre bolt on the belt tensioner wheel so that I can reduce tension and remove the drivebelt?

I tried turning the centre bolt clockwise with a crows foot  spanner on a long bar: but the tensioner wheel would not move and the spanner ended up slipping off the nut.

To be clear:  when I tried to turn the nut clockwise  it was as if I were  facing the centre bolt and so when  I tried to ease the tension  on the belt, I moved the long bar towards the rear of the car.  Is this the correct direction to release the belt?

Yes ,if facing the tensioner and your bar is at 6 o'clock and you're pulling towards the rear 👍
