Thinking of buying mk4 focus 1.0 123bhp enough power?

Featured Replies

Hey my name is peter Iam looking at buying the mk4 focus st line x at the minute I have a 2008 Audi A3 1.6 petrol my question is how is the 1.0 in the focus I haven’t managed to test drive one yet so wanted some thoughts on the way it drives does this engine have enough get up and go ? What are your thoughts please

Hi, I bought a mk4 Titanium X estate with that engine last summer, having come from a SEAT Exeo (rebadged Audi A4) 2.0 143 TDI. Since then I've done about 10,000 miles including family holidays full of kids and suitcases from the South East of England to Devon and also to the South of France. The engine has enough power to lug the family and all their stuff around motorways cruising quite happily at 80 MPH / 130 KPH and still have just enough in reserve to easily overtake when needed. It doesn't have the instant surge of power that the larger TDI engine had and the car is not as much fun or as rewarding to drive but it does a competent enough job. 0-30 acceleration from lights, etc is also not as immediate as the VW/Audi TDI but in sport mode is quick enough and lays the power down nice and effectivly with very well managed traction, keeping wheel spin to a minimum. 30-60 acceleration is all about being in the right gear - keeping it in lower gears for a little bit longer than you would with the TDI certainly perks the performance up a bit. MPG wise, on a long motorway cruise, heavily laden with wife, kids and all their gear, I will easily get 45-50 MPG but with more spirited driving around town with lots of acceleration and braking, I get something more like 35 MPG. Noise and comfort wise, it's a lot quieter than the VW / Audi TDI, as you would expect, but the 3 cylinder engine isn’t quite as smooth as the 4 cylinder, 2.0 litre petrol GTDI engine that I had in the Toyota Avensis prior to my SEAT, especially at lower revs.

I hope all that helps, any more questions then please feel free to ask.

I had an 8P generation A3, but a 2.0 TDI in my case. Not sure exactly which 1.6 petrol you've got (guessing 1.6 fsi 115ps?), but the Ecoboost will have at least another 10ps and more torque from lower rpm. If you were happy with a normally aspirated 1.6, I'm sure you'll find it copes fine.

I’ve got a mk4 titanium x hatchback. I came from a mk3 Focus 1.6 Ecoboost with 150hp down to the 1.0 Ecoboost 125hp, both manual. The 1.0 125 is describe as adequate - it’s by no means fast, but it’ is enough for this size of car and that’s coming from someone that’s dropped quite a few horsepower in an equivalent sized car. MPG is about 42/43 in mixed driving.

There is the 1.0 155 mild hybrid you can now buy if your worried about power.

Why is anyone worried about power in 2020? Genuine question. The national highest speed limit is 70mph and any modern car will easily achieve well beyond that and the acceleration in-between 0 to 70mph should be adequate for anyone, I'd be worried if it wasn't and that's without looking at any figures for the car.

For a bit of fun when they can. Some peeps like to pedal to the metal at times even though they shouldn't be.

Driving has to be fun, adequate is not good enough.

Fun to drive is top of the list of requirements!
I almost got a merc gla 160 urban edition last year, looked great, all reviews said “no fun to drive” forget it.

My first car was an A plate 903cc Fiat Uno..quick off the mark , 0-60 in about a minute , was fun at the time. Done a ton in its own time.

As for the 1L 125ps I’d highly recommend test driving the mild hybrid as well. I’ve not driven either but have seen bad reviews of the manual gearbox in the 1L focus.

The question was does it have enough power, not is it fun to drive. That was my question, why would it not have enough power. It seems the question was related to it being a small one litre and does it have enough get up and go.

It's not about speeding, it's about when you're on a inclined sliproad fully loaded can you accelerate to merge in correctly and safely.  I'm not worried so much about top speed or 0-60, but in-gear torque is important.

Don't you drive an ST?

Ever tried a Fiat 500?  Toyota Aygo?  VW Up!? These cars don't have 'enough' power for proper roads.  Nippy enough around town yes, but as soon as you get to an uphill slip road onto a 70mph road it quickly becomes apparent just how little power (or rather torque!) these cars actually have.  Add some passengers and luggage and it's a recipe for disaster...

You might be surprised to find that there are still some modern cars on the road today with a 15+ second 0-60 time...  How on earth are you meant to safely merge onto a busy dual carriageway with that?

Yes I do but that's not the point I was making. I have an ST because I wanted an ST. I didn't make a post asking if it had enough power. But clearly I'm the only one that thinks like this.

They do have enough power for 'proper' roads otherwise they wouldn't be allowed to be made.

Perhaps the OP could indicate if he feels his post has been adequately addressed? He did ask if the engine had "enough get up and go", which is, unfortunately, rather a subjective question to which we will all have a different answer.

Just for example, my Mrs has a 60ps SEAT Mii (VW Up! clone) and she is perfectly happy with it, whereas I find it rather frustrating on the open road. We're all different!

So I did test drive a 125bhp 1.0 when I was getting my mk 4 focus.  With 3 adults in it still moved but you did have to work at it a bit.  It does help that it is turbo so does have some torque.

I would say to the OP that you need to test drive it on a range of roads.
