Clutch replacement

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I was wondering if you could give me some advises/directions on clutch replacement.

I have just bought my first car - Ford Fiesta 1.5 diesel 2013, the car has 60 000 mileage.

I have tried to find some information on when the clutch should be changed in the car. Some of the articles say around 60 000 but some say it is too early to do so. As I am completely new to this topic I have thought I will seek some help in here.

Any advises are much appreciated :)

Hi,

There isn't a clutch change interval, it's not a service item like filters and belts.

Clutches wear at different rates depending on driving styles etc and wouldn't usually be changed until there is a fault with them.

Just for reference, I had one car with 270,000 miles still on the original clutch!

The one item you should be concerned about changing at the correct interval/mileage is the cambelt, and that's around the 70, 000 miles mark...a snapped cambelt can destroy the engine.  Some engines have a chain instead of a belt, and they last more or less for ever... hopefully someone here can advise you what your engine's got. ie belt or chain.

Your car has cam belt. I think ford say 10 yrs or 125k miles whichever comes first. Don’t quote me on that , it certainly was that for my 2007 fiesta 1.6 diesel. Some people say always replace belt early just in case. It is true that if belt goes it will cause expensive major engine damage. The belt is sometimes referred to as timing belt    Or     Cam belt. It’s the same thing. How long a clutch lasts is down to the style of driving. My previous fiesta 1.6 diesel was  on 164k when taken off road due to abs problem and no sign of clutch problems.  The timing belt on these cars is easier than many other cars to do so should be cheaper to do than many other makes models.

Hi All, thanks so much for your responses, all makes sense perfectly. I will focus on cam belt - i think I have found some info somewhere that it is 10 yrs or 120k so that would make sense

Don't worry too much about the clutch until it starts to fail/slip

If you drive well without riding the clutch too much, it might last the life of the car
