What’s the latest with automatic system updates?

Featured Replies

I’ve realised I can get close enough to my house for wifi to (hopefully) work well enough for updates.
I keep the Automatic System updates turned off for reasons I can’t even remember.
Has anyone had any luck with auto updates at all? Any sign of connecting at all?
The buttons not there for nothing ....

I have auto turned on now.... thought it now works in UK?

maybe I’ve just lost the plot..... been waiting for sync maps updates for soooooooooo loooooong!

I've kept auto updates switched on since I've had the car. I mentioned in another thread that I kept getting a "downloading update" message (it gave a file number, can't remember what!😃). Nothing seems to have changed, except I did have a lot of issues with losing GPS signal and now I don't. Not seen the downloading message for some months though.

I take it you connected to your house or work wifi ?
maybe had the ‘Free’ Vodafone wifi at the time?

Yes, that's right, Alex  - car's been sat outside home a lot this year, of course. We also have Wi-Fi at the site where we have our caravan, also I tend to connect the car to Wi-Fi if we stay in a cottage for a holiday. I've been surprised also how readily it picks up any nearby hotspot when you park up near shops for instance.

Its not going to download anything at the moment anyway. Yet again Ford have let us down with failed promises

Yeah I got to ‘Scan for updates now’ button...then..‘Scanning for updates’..

nothing

doesn’t even say after , no there’s no updates .

is there any reason to not have ‘Automatic system updates’ turned on?

If a map update ever appears I wouldn't want to rely on the Sync3 downloading it via WiFi uncorrupted. Much better to download to a PC. Thats why I keep mine turned off ,also stops random messages .

But Ford , releasing sync 3 must’ve made , tested and used auto updates over wifi before releasing it.
What random messages?

Probably tested under laboratory conditions not with a  car sitting outside someone's house with wifi signal subject to interference. If it does download over WiFi  you have no copy of the download which of course you do if you do it yourself on a PC. The WIFI download maybe be fine for a small update but i wouldn't trust it for such large download as the Maps ( around 26GB).Lots of us used to get random messages on vehicle startup  eg no WIFI unable to complete download when it was turned on. Dealers even used to advise keeping it off.

@Comares2001 is correct, dealers are still recommending to leave it off. I think the main problem is the files are just too big. If it was less than 1gb then it's plausible but when the software comes out at 3.5gb and maps is 26gb+ it's a bit of a risk.

This system was designed and tested in the US where the infrastructure is better (believe it or not) and they have either WiFi signal or carrier signal wherever they go.

At present leaving the WiFi on causes more issues with Sync than its worth.

Turned off.

If it only runs when the engine is on that's pointless. I don't sit there outside the house with the engine running.  If it can run when the car is off then it's just going to drain the battery.
