Map fault

Featured Replies

Hi guys ,I’m after some advice?

iv recently blanked off egr now I’m getting a map sensor error code and limp mode but if I unplug the maf it stops both problems.im is rather have it sorted rather than leave maf unplugged.

any advice would be appreciated

The PCM works out how much gas is recirculated through the EGR by the reduction in intake air through the MAF.

Is the EGR faulty?  If not, remove the blank and everything should be fine again.

As Tom said, the MAP is linked to the EGR flow.

The ECU calculates air flow from engine rpm, displacement, and the intake Manifold pressure (MAP) & temperature, This is the total flow through the engine including recirculated gas, It also measures the intake air with the MAF. This is net flow, not including recirculation. Thus the difference is the EGR flow. In most Ford engines, this difference is used to control the EGR, so is critical. Some engines have a flow sensor in the EGR pipework, which is a much more accurate way to measure EGR flow then subtracting two rather inaccurate readings. But this costs money, something Ford are a bit allergic to, so they use the crude method.

If the EGR is blanked or faulty, there are no additional sensors to confirm where the fault lies, so the ECU has to make a guess whether it is MAF, MAP or EGR. And guesses made by clever software are often wrong! (Anyone looking forward to being in a driverless car controlled by clever software?!)

So the first step is to try unblanking the EGR. Older cars like my 2006 Focus are very tolerant of EGR blanking, but newer models are getting more and more fussy about such things.
