Ford Focus MK2 1.6 TDci stalling when accelerating at 3k+ RPM

Featured Replies

Hello,

my Ford Focus MK2 1.6 TDci (Diesel) of 2007 is stalling when I accelerate.
First time it happened when I was driving behind a lorry on, I was at around 60 kmph behind the lorry and I wanted to overtake it, I downshifted to the third gear because I did not want to risk overtaking him too slow because the street was on a curve. And moderately pressed on the gas pedal and got at around 80-85 kmph when the engine just stalled at around 3100 rpm with oil and engine lights on... luckily I was already barely ahead of the lorry and my car was losing speed because, obviously, gas pedal not working anymore, I had to stop at the side of the road. I turned off the car and waited about 5 seconds and started the engine again, it took a second longer then usual to start it but it went on without any dash lights.

I was shocked, I thought it is just a one time thing, or rather, i hoped that it would be. Next time was a few days after that when I was driving home, there was again... a car driving 70 kmph on a 100 kmph road...  I saw no reason to drive that slow behind that car since it was not rainy or dark at all... so I went for the overtake and downshifted to third gear (usually I do not downshit when overtaking if the road is long and I have a clear sight of cars) and I was overtaking him (he suddenly started driving fast too for no reason, like they always do... you follow these people at 70 kmph for hundreds of meters even though its 100 kmph road, and when you try to overtake them, they accelerate...). I was now driving almost at 90kmph and barely ahead of that guy when suddenly my engine stalled again at around 3300 rpm, since I did not have space to move, i head to break and get behind him and then stop at the side of the road... also my power steering went off at the last 10 meters before coming to a stop. The same engine and oil lights were on when the engine stalled. Basically, the acceleration does not react at all anymore when this happens.

It happened a third time on a highway, i was under 3k rpm on worth gear I think, overtaking a lorry when the car stalled, luckily it was like 6AM in the morning and not many vehicles were on the road... I had to repeat the same things here, stop, start, go.

It did not happen ever since because I am trying to accelerate fast at all anymore.... Like. I never reach 2800 rpm anymore because I am afraid that my car will stall again.

I noticed that SOMETIMES, when I moderately hit the pedal at 5th gear, the car starts to lose power or starts to stutter unless I get my feet of the pedal...

I tried googling it but never got any specific results, or rather I am not sure what to look for. I find results about fuel pump or valve and sensor issues... but I wanted to get help on a forum by asking an actual question to get answers to my actual question. Maybe anyone can help me here? Due to corona I have some budgeting issues so I do not think I can go to a workshop since the last time I was there, simply changing the oil filter and oil cost me over 100 pounds, ever since that, I starting changing my oil and oil filter myself, but I drive a car for like 2 years and do not have proper experience in that sort of things. I see no reason to pay so much money if I can do that for less than 30 pounds by myself.

TL;DR: When overtaking someone at around 3000+ rpm on 3rd gear, the engine stalls. Check engine yellow lights and red oil lights show up. If turning the engine off and on, the lights disappear and I can continue driving. Sometimes when driving fast (120kmph) on 5th gear, lightly losing power for a second or the engine kind of lightly stutters. At that moment I immediately stopped pressing on the pedal fearing that the engine will stall, so I do not know what awaits me if not depressing pedal at that "losing power/stutter" situation, so I never risked.

When was the fuel filter last changed?

Hello,

I don't know, bought the car 6 months ago, it's my second car.

It drove 163.000km before I bought it.

I immediately changed the oil and oil filter at the advise of the seller.

So you think it's the fuel filter?

Yes, likely to be the fuel filter.  That's the first thing I'd change.

If the fault still remains after that, you'll have to get it plugged in to read the fault codes.

I just ordered a fuel filter and read the codes with forscan. Had a odb to usb cable that I bought for my last car. It showed me a bunch of fault codes but instead somewhere that you should delete them and read again because they might be wrong and too old, I was hesitant but one thing motivated me to so that, which is, it read that my key fob sensor /chip immobilizer was faulty and not connected or something, which is not true, so I reset the codes.

When reading codes again, I took the car on a trip in the village, and no fault codes ever appeared...

I assume you didn't hit 3k in 3rd gear through the village lol?

Were there any fuel pressure codes at all?  They're the usual ones from a clogged filter.

Key faults aren't uncommon, they can be triggered by just turning the key too quickly sometimes.  As long as it doesn't come back you can ignore that one.

No, didn't driver faster then 50 kmph xd

I don't recall reading anything related to "fuel" . There were some dpf error codes and other stuff, but they did not come again after the reset and driving a bit.

my mk  2 1.6 done this to but only when trying to over take some one fast or going up big hill and stick your foot down to get more  speed to climb hill it was down to   fuel filter that was months ago and car been ok still or and apart from spit in turbo pipe

Well, of these 3 scenarios, two of them were indeed happening at overtaking... Basically 3k+ rpm.  I really hope it's the fuel filter since that is cheap and can be done by myself with the help of god of YT....

What do you mean spit in turbo?

My fuel filter should arrive at the end of this week if I'm lucky.

Hopefully he means a 'split' in the turbo pipe.

'split' in the turbo pipe the one on the left side  bottom as you look down from the top

I just changed the fuel filter. I'm going to test drive on high rpm and tell you guys if it worked!!

Old out, new is in. (Old one is from ford, original I guess? New is from FRAM, whatever company that is...)

I initially ordered a bosh fuel filter, but it was the wrong one, I had to drive to the nearest auto parts seller and they had a fuel filter in inventory , I didn't care what brand it was because I couldn't wait 1 more week for another one, and I think it doesn't really matter what company it is from.

My ford apparently has 2 versions of parts, old and renewed, both for the MK2.

Hey guys, it worked!!

In third gear up to 90 kmph.

I sadly don't recall the revs, but I know it was over 3k.

Usually the car was giving up at 3k.

Also I went up to 150kmph in 5th gear and everything was perfect.

No stuttering or especially, the engine going off.

Ps: hey guys, I was wondering, there is a lot of oil around my turbo ... Is it bad? How do I know if my turbo starts failing? I was just wondering because I heard a lot of things about that.

Concerning the turbo noise... It whisles like a sports car when the revs go down after you stop flooring the gas.
