Oil light on after oil change

Featured Replies

Hi, wondering if anyone can help, I always service my own car but I'm def not a mechanic, never had an issue but after changing oil and filter this time the oil light stays on unless accelerating. I tried taking excess oil out as thought I had put too much in didnt work. Is my sensor knackered or something else?

We'll need some more info...engine size, fuel, year, etc?  Where is the level on the dipstick?

The oil pressure light is just a simple on/off switch that rarely fails.  I'd suggest not driving, let alone accelerating, until the cause has been found.

Its a 2007 1.4tdci diesel. Light usually comes on for a bit but goes off after few seconds, this time stayed on, drained some off as level was over max, checked again this morning, level was near the top on dipstick but fine, turned engine on, light didnt come on, drove away and then light was coming on when braking to a stop, them would go off as soon as accelerating. Juat drew some more oil out, now fot the dipstick to just over half to see if that would help but light still on when static. Wondered if sensor has gunk on as I used an engine flush before changing oil

Ok, the oil pressure switch is on the front left of the engine, just above and slightly left of where the dipstick tube enters the block.  You can just unscrew it and check it's clean.

Too much oil shouldn't trigger the switch as it's just looking for pressure.  As soon as the oil pump can supply enough pressure the light should go off.  Shouldn't be on for more than a second or so after starting.

There is a possibility of gunk/carbon blocking the gauze on the oil pump so I'm not a fan of oil flushes personally.

Ok great thanks, I will try and unscrew the sensor and give it a wipe down, failing that I will pop a new one in. I won't use a flush again I think, to be honest this car is past that stage of keeping it all clean now, case of keeping it running as long as possible!

Flush may well have moved the sludge around and blocked the strainer in the sump. I wouldnt go driving it anywhere until you have diagnosed where the issue lies.

Update....

So I changed the oil pressure switch as was cheap and easy to change, unfortunately didn't help. I started thinking about how uncomfortable I was with the oil filter when fitting it, it was a cheaper one than I usually like to fit as I had to purchase it somewhere I don't usually go, and it did not go in well. So I decided to buy a new oil filter and just change that too to give me piece of mind before admitting defeat, then when I opened up the cap to the filter, the whole filter had snapped and twisted as it was such bad quality! Anyway, change to decent filter that went in fine and hey presto, oil light off and engine feeling healthy! Will never deviate from the better quality items ever again!

Thanks for the replies though, good to know there's somewhere to come when help is required!

Lesson learned. I always use Ford filters, the difference in price is only about the same as a cup of coffee and a cake so if you only change them once a year it is silly not to.

I have an issue on my Ford C-Max 1.6 tdci 85kw 2014. After first start the oil light stays on for about 5 or 6 seconds and after that it's all good. Tried to change oil and oil filter again, didn't work, tried with the sensor still didn't work. So any help will do, thanks in advance.
