LPG in FIESTA ST182

Featured Replies

Hello to everyone,

i own an ST 182 upgraded to ΜΤ215 Mountune. I am thinking the idea of converting it to LPG. Have anyone done that before? Is it running smoothly and with what LPG manufacturer?

I have found that only PRINS makes a kit so far for the specific engine (JTJA). Any help?

Thank you

Not to Fiesta but I had my old Mondeo ST24 V6 converted to LPG and ran it for 7 years (owned car for 10  years)...would I do it again?...Probably not and why my current car is a diesel.

In the main it ran fine but had issues with plugs, HT leads and coil pack. From memory the plugs run hotter on LPG, I never did get round to trying cooler rated plugs. Long journey's were a pain in the butt as I'd have to work out where I could fill up. Fuel economy is actually worse on LPG too, my car averaged 28mpg on petrol and 22mpg on LPG...it only works out better because LPG costs less per litre, and depending on what size tank you get, you'll most likely lose boot space too; I had a 60 litre tank in the spare wheel well and had to make a false floor otherwise it would stick up, this also meant that I didn't carry my spare wheel (unless I went on a trip away, and lost more boot  space). Also the tanks only hold 80% of their capacity, so had to fill up more frequently.

You will still need to use petrol, as the car starts with petrol, and only switches to LPG after a warm up period, which could be a set time on the ecu and is temperature dependant. In cold weather it would run rough on LPG if the engine hadn't warmed up enough so you might have to switch back to petrol for a while longer. I also found that when the tank was getting low, if I accelerated hard then it would switch back to petrol as I believe the pressure in the LPG tank couldn't cope with the demand from the engine (saw a similar thing on a friends V8 Range Rover too), though I could manually switch back to LPG when driving steady again. Additionally the engine is not as powerful when running on LPG, not massively under power, but noticable.

I saved over £3500 in petrol costs in 7 years, this was above the cost of the conversion which was £1600 and that took 21000 miles to achieve that. Bear that in mind as it will only be worth it if you keep the car for a long time.

I'm guessing you want to save money on fuel costs, is it that bad on the ST? Thought the modern Ecoboost engines were better on fuel than my old V6. My diesel averages 40mpg and this works out better than the ST24, taking in to account petrol and LPG costs. I'm happy with that for now.

David thank you for your reply and your time informing me. It is a fact that most of people consulting me not to convert to LPG and the only thing that stops me is that i dont know a single person thath converted his ST or similar engine.

I believe your issues in the Mondeo was based in the fact that in early years LPG was something unknown or still developing. Nowadays LPG that goes with 2 years warranty for the kit and 5 for the installation is something positive.

Also i dont know if the supercharger is something that doesnt go with LPG

The fuel economy is pretty good on the ecoboost engine as said above. LPG conversions are only generally done on big engines that drink fuel (v8 Land Rovers, 5.0L American muscle cars etc that all do around 10 MPG.) as the fuel cost saved quickly offsets the cost of conversion (roughly 2 years if you do average milage).

A 1.6L ecoboost already does 30mpg, it would take you something like 5-6 years to offset the cost. Who's to say you're going to have the car then?

The ST is supposed to be a sporty car and there for fun. If you bought it to be worried about MPG and that it costs too much to run, you bought the wrong car im afraid.

Seriously why would you want to drive a bomb. Seen cars with this conversation with windows blown out cus of leaks - all you need is a spark.

My previous car had an LPG conversion, a Mercedes C240, I loved it. There were no specific LPG issues with it and it ran smoothly, and I didn't half feel smug filling it up paying only 55p/liter, which it consumed roughly at the same rate it did with unleaded. When starting it cold, it takes about 3 to 4 minutes of initially running on petrol, before automatically switching to LPG when up to temperature. You won't even notice it changing. Performance is exactly the same, unless I glanced down at the controller, I couldn't tell what fuel it was using.

It was a wonderfully smooth car, and I would have no hesitation at all in seeking another LPG car. Beware of taking 'bar' advice from folk who have never owned/run one. It is full if urban myths with many folk simply thinking it's too good to be true, so they 'rubbish' it with no 1st hand knowledge...

Tunnels:

Please note that cars with LPG or CNG conversions are not permitted to travel through the Channel Tunnel or through other mainland Europe tunnels. - wonder why?

However, because the emissions are that low, you don't pay a bean in congestion charges in many cities including London, swings & roundabouts, swings & roundabouts LOL

Oh, there are 23 Million homes in the UK connected to the gas grid for their heating - I wonder why...

Hi . I habve a Fiesta ecoboost 1000cc  , 11/2016 .I am thinkig to turn it to LPG .I found the Prins VSI 2.0  model. Has anybody any experience from LPG use??

Surprised there isn't more interest in LPG now, it's still only 64p/liter at my garage where petrol is £1.84/liter! I use to love my old LPG car, sad it just wore out in the end... (nothing to do with LPG, just general Mercedes poor build)
