Mondeo mk4 tdci Glowplug relay location

Featured Replies

Hi sorry if this has been discussed before,

I have a 2009 mk4 2.0 tdci mondeo and having issues with the glowplugs and think it could be the relay

But i cant find where this would be located on the mk4 mondeo

could anyone point me in the right direction?

thanks for any help

Yes i have seen that Diagram but where the R4 relay location has a standard relay in it, not a  heavy duty 60amp relay i would of expected to see,

So am not convinced this is the correct relay, as most fords from what i can see use an 8 pin heavy duty relay for the glowplugs located elsewhere than the main fuse/relay box

of which i cant seem to locate

Tel us more! What issues are you having with the glowplugs? Have you got a multimeter? Also I wired  a 12volt bulb in a holder up to 2 wires with Croc clips that is useful for confirming volts on the glowplug bussbar.

R4 is indeed the glow plug relay.  Take the relay out and see what's stamped on it with the amp rating.

Basically the glowplugs dont seem to be heating up, have changed that R4 relay and checked all fuses and glowplugs via multi meter through the main plug to the glowplugs

All appear to be okay.... so am stumped

With the glowplugs sat behind the engine on this model hidden behind EGR valve and other things it will be a lot of work getting to the glowplugs themselves

And like i say after checking via Multimeter they do seem okay

The thing is, as the glowplugs are wired in parallel, you could have 3 out of 4 of them burnt out (open circuit) and still get a ohm reading on the multimeter from the one remaining good one, if you measure with one probe on battery negative or chassis, and the other probe on the wire that feeds the glowplugs (or on the 60amp fuse) The OTHER thing is, like a light bulb, they don't last forever so do expect to have to change 'em sometime.

So you ARE getting volts on the glowplug feed wire when you turn the key? Should stay on for approx 30 seconds.

You'd have to unscrew the glowplug interconnecting bar so each glowplug is disconnected  to check' em individually. A good reading should be around 2 Ohms

The easiest test for glowplug operation is to look for the dip in battery voltage when they come on. On my car they draw not far off the 60A limit when cold, dropping to about 20A I think, as they heat up. That gives a cold resistance of well under 1ohm per plug, which cannot really be distinguished from a dead short using a multimeter, the variation in meter cable and connector resistance will swamp the reading. My battery dropped by 1 or 2 volts when the plugs came on, recovering a bit as they heated up.

Testing individual plugs will require disconnection of the linking bar / wire, or a small clamp-on current meter, a rare beast!

You have not said what the symptoms are. If it is bad starting with vibration & smoke on a very cold start, one plug dead can do this, as I found.

I have the same issue.. Bought the directed relay. but as you say its not the one in the fusebox.

I will link to my swedish forum where i asked the same question!
