S-MAX 2.0, 207BHP, Knocking engine sound

Featured Replies

Hi dear S-max owners, mechanics, engineers, specialists and people who reading this post

I own a Ford Smax Vignale 2017, 2.0 litre duratorq, 207bhp, automatic gearbox, 56000miles. Beautifull lovely car with full spec.

Can someone help me please? Engine is ticking when cold in the morning and when is hot while driving at low revs in traffic especially - slightly uphil gradient - is knocking so loundly for as long as until increasing revs or lowering obviosly changing into a lower gear.

I had this issue in the last 5 months, i can't find what is causing it, im shamed with friends in the car because the car is only 3 years old but new to me.

I purchased the car 6 months ago from Hendy Ford Horsham. Now they try to convince me that nothing is wrong (obviuosly there is costs under warranty), only Ford St Albans said to me is possible a faulty injector. All my videos provided to Hendy Ford Horsham they saying is not enough to produce a faulty part first time they changed for me only oil in the gearbox. Gate Ford St Albans branch are much serios changed the oil pressure solenoid because car went in limp mode 4 times and an error code P06DD was stored in the computer  memory. Im so disperate now, about how inconvinient is this knocking engine sound that is making me to think about other car manufactories and forget forever about Ford ... :(((

I hope to get some opinions and sugestions also i hope this to help others if they have same problems.

Hello, I assume the car has a full service history and do you know if the gearbox has been serviced as well. Ford powershift gear boxes are not the best around and need regular servicing.

Hi Akira 14

Yes, the oil in thr gear box was changed. When i was first time back in service;

Also i changed oil pressure solenoid - linked with computer diagnostic error code P06DD. I hope the car will not to go in limp mode on motways (reduced power anymore);

Dear S-max owners.

Is your S-max engine sounds the same???

This is spining my head every day, i don't think this is normal. Please help.

(FORD 2.0 Duratorq, 2017, 207 bhp, automatic, 56.000 miles on the clock, in the last 8moths filled up only premium diesel from BP and Shell since i purchased it).

Hi, I know you think that it sounds strange and I'm not saying that it's not, but it sounds exactly the same as my 2.2 diesel. But if you believe it sounds different why not try a Ford specialist.

Hi Akira 14

I'm so happy you took time to reply, thank you.

I had the car a few times in service:

1st time - they replaced oil into gear box,

2nd time - they said is nothing wrong, car has no errors after diagnostic dispite displaying a few times yellow spanner key in limp mode (lost of power). They lied to me.

3rd time - while being in limp mode again i drove it into a local garage, the took me immediately diagnosed and printed for me report, with error code P06DD, which was in the memory, engine was shut down. i google it at home and i found someone said to be linked with oil pressure solenoid affecting VVT.

4th time - being sure that i found what can cause it booked it in Ford Service under warranty they replaced it but no result, still clanking in the morning and while driving.

5th time - went back to Ford garage next day, they said may be spray pattern of the injectors under certain temperrature and pressure.

6th time - im going in service tomorrow, on the phone the tried to convince me that this is normal.

Please watch the video, listen carfully at second 50

Have you had the car longer than a month, if not I would try to exchange it for another one.

Hi Akira14

Many thanks for you support.

I purchased it in July 2020

Today i dropped the car into Hendy Ford Horsham Service again where I purchased it. I'm covered by Crystal clear warranty 12months or 12.000miles.

I was very lucky that after insisting they allowed me to discuss and show all videos to a mechanic. Normally I think they not allowed to interact with the vehicle owners.

In this afternoon they called me and said they diagnosed a new fault code which they believe is linked with the engine issues. Finger crossed 🤞

If I will get this sorted I will post here what caused this rough behavior of my engine.

Until then they ask my permission to have the vehicle for longer to test on the road.

I already had toughts to return the car, to take this matter with sales managers. I'm not sure yet about the procedure to return a car, I must read through carfully the papers received.

I glad that they are looking further into your issues for you, hopefully they will get resolved

Hello S-max owners

My car is still in service, tomorrow will be a week now - 7 days since i left it in Hendy Ford Horsham service.

Today they contacted me and said that  can't find what cause the engine clanking. They test drive it and somthimes they said it runs smoothly, somethimes engine is clanking. Exactly as i expirienced during 7 months. This car is a nightmare...

Hi S-max owners

My S-max is still in service after 18 days to Hendy Ford Horsham and they saying haven't found yet what can cause the knocking sound of the engine.

Unbelievable...

I run out o patience...

  • 9 months later...

Hi, this sounds like I have the same, 2.0 diesel Powershift auto with diesel knocking noise as though the engine is too advanced and pinking, started at 55,000 miles.  I would be interested to see what the outcome is on this one.

  • 11 months later...

Hi, just wondering is anyone ever got anywhere with this? My car is doing exactly the same. I’d like to get it sorted but don’t know where to start.

thanks in advance
