I have a 2012 mondeo 2.0 tdci edge estate manual.

It's done 195000 odd Miles

The belt snapped yesterday eve and it refuses to start up again. Any reason why?

I got a mechanic to come out he opened the timing cover and has recommended to change the belt and pulleys etc as well as the aux belt obviously. Oh yes plus water pump.

It should start without an aux belt.  Only runs the alternator and AC pump on these.  Steering is semi electric but that won't work anyway due to the lack of voltage without an alternator charge.

The aux belt can take out the cambelt when it snaps, but you'll be left with engine damage if that's the case so just replacing the belt would be pointless.

You'd need further diagnosis done on it tbh.  We need to know if A) the battery is flat due to running without an aux belt and B) if the cambelt is still intact and hasn't slipped a tooth.

So mechanic came down and checked timing which was out by 3 teeth and replaced the belt and other bits as well as aux belt still not starting..

He said he will look at the tappets..

I do apologise for the misinformation. I always thought the engine wouldn't start without an aux belt, but I guess it would, but not for long as the battery would likely die without receiving charging from alternator.

It depends on the engine.  On your car it'd overheat pretty quickly with the aux driven water pump so not recommended at all.  On this particular engine you could probably do half an hour or so on a good battery without lights etc on.

So rocker cover taken off and found 2 tappets damaged right by the cam shaft

Replacing the cambelt without checking that was a waste of time I'm afraid.  The valves will be damaged as well.

That doesn't sound good at all, I think I will replace my aux and timing belt very very soon then, just in case. It has been over 8 years since car would have had a new one.

Without checking for internal engine damage.  You might get away with one slipped tooth but at three teeth out I'd have expected internal damage myself.

The pistons will have hit the valves so you can either pull the head off and replace the damaged valves and tappets, then refit the head with new headgasket etc.  Or just give up on this engine and swap a good used one in.

So an update the mechanic apparently has broken a part after putting the engine back together I will attach pics.

Now he said it comes from the brake vacuum pump so I went and bought one but in my simple mind it doesn't look like it came out of this.

Plus the car now reports fuel high pressure sensor issue and also cam sensor.

It only starts on starter spray and then cuts out.

Note they didn't remove the head.

The round part that I've pictured shows some other metal has snapped off does anyone have a clue wtf this part is called please and would it stop an engine from starting up?
