Fuel filter change help

Featured Replies

Hi everyone.

I'm new in here. Hope you can help.

I'm trying to change the fuel filter and I'm struggling to bleed the fuel through. The car doesn't have the primer bulb built in. I have used 2 different of the shelf primer bulbs but they are not strong enough to suck the fuel through. I have tried sucking with my mouth and I can suck a but of fuel through before it stops. The fuel is not free flowing.

Any ideas

Thanks

Sorry I thought the post would show what car I have. But it doesn't.

I have smax 2009 2.0 psa engine.

Are you sure you're sucking the inlet line?

Sucking air is difficult (which is why the HP pump can't prime itself) and it will take a while to suck the fuel up if it's drained all the way back to the tank.  You need to make sure you've got a good air-tight seal, and the one way valve is connected the right way.

Does the primer bulb show some resistance (slow to 'open' again) or is it opening as quick as as you squeeze it?  There may be an air leak somewhere if there's no resistance.

OK so the first one I used you squeeze it and it stays squeezed it doesn't open back up until you unplug it. The next one was a cheap one of eBay and that just opens after you've squeezed but I'm sure that one is faulty as I can blow through it with my mouth both ways.

You mentioned an air leak if no resistance. It's the high resistance that's stops me from sucking its like a vacume.

Yeah, it shouldn't remain sucked in like that.  Definitely sure you've got the right fuel line?

You could open the fuel filler (stick the 'she-wee' in if EasyFuel) to make sure the tank isn't pressurised due to a blocked breather.

I tried opening the fuel filler cap. In the pic I suck from the green connector

I've just had a thought. I haven't replaced the filter yet as I'm scared I might not get the car started if I can't prime the system. Could it be that the old filter is giving the resistance?

Yeah, that's the wrong line.   You should be sucking the IN line on the left hand side.  If you make sure it's all spotlessly clean, you can suck the filter 'out' on the right hand side instead.

In this YouTube video it shows to do it from that green connector.? But it does say if resistance is to high to use a mechanical vacume pump so they must be known for a hight resistance in the system.

Just making work for themselves using that method lol.  You'll pull the fuel up to filter easy enough, pulling it through the HP pump is what's causing the resistance.

Ah. Thanks. Will give this a go tomorrow. Will let you know how it goes.
