2015 Petrol S-Max: ESC service required and steering assist malfunction service required came up after going through a puddle and now I have no steering power assistance

Featured Replies

Hi everyone, just went through a puddle as no way to avoid it and half way through the above alerts came up and I lost all steering power assistance. I was crawling through it and not speeding. I was able to drive home but was a little hairy with the very heavy steering of the S-Max. Looking for any advice as to what it may be, checked the fuse no.19 for the power steering and it was Ok. Would appreciate any help or knowledge.

Cheers Steve

Plus I have noticed that the Hill Assist and the Lane keeping were also defective from the same time as the others. Are there any other fuses to check other no.19?

Cheers Steve

How much water are we talking about, a couple of inches or a couple of feet ?

Hi, it was about 6-7 inches and drove carefully not fast at all.

Does your 2015 S-Max have the hydraulic power steering pump fitted?

Driving through water can cause the belt to start and slip on the pully. If you have EPS then I would suspect that water has got in to the sensor on the steering rack.

Hi Unofix,

So that would mean a quick trip to the garage get the analyser on it and see if the alarm codes will reset, if not then it should point to the sensor as being defective. So do you know whether the replacing of the sensor is it a big costly job?? I was thinking it could have been water getting in to the power steering module, however like I said I was only going slowly going through the water so your diagnosis sounds better then mine.

If it is the power steering pressure sensor they cost about £35 and about one hours labour.

If you have a fault warning on the dashboard then get the DTC codes read and it will give you a good indication of the problem
