Creaking under braking - Focus Mk2.5

Featured Replies

Hi all, first post but long time lurker!

Started getting some noises from the rear of my Focus under heavier braking - same sort of creaking sound you get if you push the brake pedal hard whilst stationary.

The drums/ shoes are original as far as I know - 2009 car so probably due a change anyway. Am I right in thinking worn shoes / drums is the most likely culprit or is there anything else I should be looking out for?

The noises only happen under braking, not going over bumps or anything like that.

Also if anyone could recommend decent brands for replacement drums / shoes I'd appreciate it - looking at the Pagid set on Autodoc at the moment.

Cheers!

The noises you can hear are probably the auto handbrake adjusters reaching there limit and unable to adjust any more. Don't wait too long to change the brake shoes, you will by now also probably need new drums.

Thanks for that. Going to tackle it this weekend if I can get hold of the parts in time!

Remember when you fit the new brake shoes to (1) leave the handbrake off (2) move the little adjustment cams all the way back on the auto adjust.

Once fully fitted and you have done BOTH sides operate the foot brake a few times and then the handbrake a few times and the shoes will adjust up to the correct settings.

Do not press the brake until the drum cover is back on. I made that mistake once and popped off the rubber covers on the cylinders and brake fluid went everywhere lol

Thanks for the tips everyone!

Another quick question - I've never raised both rear wheels at the same time before. Am I best jacking up on the rear subframe and putting stands under the pinch welds, or the other way round?

Cheers

I would normally jack slightly down a bit from normal then add the stands in the correct place for example.
