Ford focus electrical problem?

Featured Replies

Was wondering if anyone could help prior to taking to a garage.

Occasionally (about 4 times a week), I will be driving my FF and then all of a sudden all lights on the dash come on, warning sound, and error message of 'engine malfunction'. The vehicle then continues to drive as normal, even though all lights on the dash are on. This is then followed by 'acceleration reduced' message. I have tried to figure out when this happens, and I have concluded it is normally after a rough/ bump in the road etc. This would suggest loose connection??? But where? What am I looking for. Equally, sometimes when the vehicle starts, I get all warning lights on, and the vehicle won't start. This is normally corrected by leaving the vehicle for 30 minutes and returning to where it will then start. So fustrating and making the car unreliable. Is this connected to the alarm system? Sometimes all it needs is getting out of the car, locking it, and then opening and then it starts. 58 plate/titanium. Thank you in advance.

You could do with reading the codes really, if you can, but it sounds like the common Focus instrument cluster fault.

The pins for the connector on the circuit board crack and loose connection flagging up running issues and warning lights.

When it does happen, stop, take the key out and open and close the door and start aging, it should go away temporarily.

If you get to read the codes and it is the cluster issue then you will have a huge list of "LOST COMMUNICATION WITH xxxxx" errors and "THEFT DETECTED"

There are a few places that advertise a send, repair and return service for this issue, on EBAY it should not cost you more than about £70.

Don't try to fix it yourself, it's a bugger to get the needles back on correctly

Don't try and replace your cluster with a second hand one as you will have to reprogram it to your car
