What would cause a rumble sound from the front end?

For years I’ve had a rumble sound when turning right but it doesn’t do it all the time so it’s hard for me to make it do it on command. It’s not a Grindy wheel bearing sound it’s more of a rumble like when you go over the rumble stips on a motorway. Mk2.5 Tdci 1.6

No hasn’t got worse I just want to find out what it is and get it fixed as I get a few weird issues/niggles from the front end so fixing this might cure the rest

Sounds like a wheel bearing problem to me. They are not hard to replace so give it a try and for the sake of a few quid you can cross that off the list of possible problems.

Is there anything I can do to see if it is the bearing? It doesn’t seem to make any noise while on a turn which they normally do if bearing

Lift it on jack stands as high as possible and spin the wheel you will hear it grinding. Some say also if the wheel is spinning and you hold the spring you should feel the grating through it.

Thanks I’ll give it a go. Why do I have to jack it as high as I can? Is just enough for the wheels to be off the ground not enough?

When it's low you can only grip the sides and spin it when it higher you can full force spin it.

I tried both wheels and all I can hear is a grinding sound which I think might be the brakes though? It’s hard to tell if it just the pads touching or a bearing? Wheel didn’t seem to click or wobble when I pulled on it either.

Well you can remove the brake pads tighten the caliper back on slightly then put a couple of bolts on the wheel and test again. The pad shouldn't be rubbing the caliper piston should be retracting once the brake pedal is released so whilst doing it I would check the caliper is working properly and not dragging the pads.

I just did one side and it seems to be the brakes making the noise as it stopped when I took the pads off and spun the wheel. Is this normal to hear the pads touching the discs or should it be silent?

Lol forgot that bit. I can’t see anything wrong by looking, tightened the 2 calliper bolts.

To be honest it sounds very much like the ESP system, I wondered what the noise was for years before I figured out it was the ESP. If you turn the steering wheel to the right or left whilst breaking it should make a sound as brake fluid is being pumped to the relevant caliper.

If it makes the same sound when doing that then that is what it is.

You could turn the ESP off using the dash and stalk just to see if the noise stops then turn it back on afterwards?
