Chair Shops?

Featured Replies

Any recommendations of actual shops where I can try a few recliner chairs nowadays?

I bought one online a few months ago but it turned out to be far too short and the 'manual' footrest was so stiff I couldn't get it down!  Obviously wary of buying another online now, (also not sure I'll actually be able to get to any of the shops but one problem at a time!).  So looking for something tall, 'easy' manual or electric recline, and ideally easy clean covers, but that's not a deal breaker as I do have a wetvac now.

I thought about DFS but they don't have a sale on!  I'm kidding, of course they do...  But they seem very expensive for a single chair, though I don't really have anything to base costs on...so a rough idea of how much I should be paying for the above spec would also be useful.

I don’t understand the appeal of recliners.Had one once, always a nice view of the ceiling and nothing much else and too much effort to incline into the best position. This was going back a few years though.I prefer a nice comfy chair and a well positioned over sized stool.

Let's not take another thread into stool territory!

Mine is nicely weighted tbh, one button click and the feet come up, then just push back gently and the backrest stops wherever I stop.  Lean forward a bit and it lifts a bit.  I reckon it was an expensive suite when new though, was already 3rd hand time I got it so no idea how much it cost or where it came from.

Having had a recliner I wouldn't have another. Ive found the backrest leans back too much, which is great when I want to look at the coving, but not for watching TV (this isn't whilst reclining btw).

DFS is probably one of the cheaper places tbh. Other than that the only places we found were local furniture shops rather than big chains.

This is why I need to try some. They're clearly not all made the same.  If I could just replace mine with an identical new one I would lol.

I don't know much about recliners Tom, but are Lazyboy supposed to be the market leaders? Not sure if thats true or not, but their name is chucked about alot

We bought our ordinary sofa and chairs from Barker & Stonehouse in Nottingham, great quality gear there.

Not sure if Lazyboy are the leaders, but it looks like they make standard chairs as well as manual or powered recliners.  They seem to have patented the option of a 'rocker recliner' chair...which sounds like a recipe for disaster with my vertigo.

Furniture Village seems more reasonably priced than DFS.  Quite like this but 13 weeks wait has put me off.

Snug Fabric Power Recliner Armchair - Furniture Village

There is a fairly 'small' local place that I might be able to get to, but even their choice of chairs seems pretty overwhelming! 😮

What I have noticed, is that many of the recliners have cloth running from the seat right down to the floor across the foot rest.  So the footrest is only as long as the seat is high.  (Following so far? ).  Mine has a double hinge mech with an extra hidden 'calf bar' so extends further than the height of the seat... :g:

When my late fathers recliner chair broke (springs snapped) he had a company come out and repair it for not a lot of money.

I've just Googled chair repairs in Suffolk and I see there are quite a number of upholsterers and furniture companies that seem to be offering repairs. If you are happy with the one you have why not look at getting it repaired/refurbished ?

Not a bad suggestion but it is knackered really.  The cloth covers are worn and stained from damp in their previous location, and the arms and backrest have lost stuffing in the main areas.  Although the base mechanism is decent, the chair itself is beyond economical repair.

I use a recliner, but TBH, in the last decade or so, I think I've actually reclined it a handful of times, just using it as a chair. Now, it was bought from, 'Land of Leather' which closed down 12 years ago, so as usual, I am of no use to you whatsoever!

On the plus side, it turns out I'm an idiot...  Who knew!

Thought about it not opening without the springs, and realised the springs must be normally expanded...and contract when the footrest is open!

So I've b*ggered my throat, wrist and guts 'rolling' both chairs over, and my heart thinks I'm running from a mammoth, but I do now have the recline function back!

(But it turns out 2 good springs are too strong, I've refitted the bent one, along with one good one as a compromise...looks like the next chair would have to be powered! 🤔 )
