Dash cam placement Question

Featured Replies

Picking up a focus for the mrs on saturday it is a titanium 2010 it has a auto dip mirror and rain sensor so I was wondering people place there dash cam`s as it has the black mesh on the windscreen .

I do not want to have a removable unit I would like to fit it in permently any advice and pic`s would be great .

cheers  Gerry

The dimples on my MK3.5 were not raised so I was able to stick the camera on the black dots without a problem, camera never moved. I turned on the heated windscreen and also warmed it with a heat gun (gently) prior to sticking the 3M pad in place, also heated the pad too and then held it in place for 60seconds. I didn't put the camera on the base until after 24hrs had passed either. Obviously if you can feel the dimples you will need to put it elsewhere but remember the MOT rules about placement.

mmm... never knew there were actual MOT rules, as I've always relied on common sense LOL

"The law related to dash cams states that they should not obstruct the field of view of the driver by more than 4cm in the swept area of the windscreen. If it does, the vehicle will fail its MOT"

black mesh on the windscreen

All original factory fitted Ford windscreens have the "mesh" or black dots inside the screen itself and not on the surface as some manufacters do. So as Jonro2009 says the glass will be smooth and you can stick the pad on the section with the mesh. You should fit the dashcam on the passenger side of the windscreen and try to position it so that the rear view mirror obscures the view of the dashcam from the drivers seat, then if the dashcam has a screen you will not get distracted by it (especially at night).

I had my Nextbase 322 fitted by Halfords and they placed it just under the mirror. Ideal position.

Crikey, I'm much too much of a control freak to allow anyone else to decide for me such an important matter! LOL

They do ask first 😉

I fitted mine at the top of the windscreen, right next to the mirror on the passenger side. When it's attached to its holder, it's just in the right place to see through the wipers.

This is the MK3 but I had it in the same place on the Mk2.

Word of warning, the mirror light sensor is on that side, so if the cam screen gets stuck on, the mirror won't dim as it thinks it's still light outside.  First world problem...but very annoying as there's no way to override it!

I had the opposite problem when I tucked my Nextbase too far behind the mirror. It covered the sensor so the mirror was permanently dimmed (I have it set so the screen turns off after 30 secs).
