Focus 3.5 average MPG reading seems way out

Featured Replies

Not sure if anyone else has come across a similar problem, I bought my 3.5 1.5tdci Focus estate about 6 weeks ago. Over that time, the average MPG has been creeping up and is now sitting on 91mpg. As much as I would like to believe it, I suspect it might be a bit optimistic! Is there any way to completely reset the average reading? Is this a common fault? I haven't found any other references, but maybe not looking in the right places.

Funny you should say that. Don't know if there's any connection, but I just filled up and it took way less than I expected for the mileage covered. I couldn't get any more in, the pump kept clicking off, and the fuel gauge is reading completely full at the moment.

Then I remembered the advice that it's best to fill up when the fuel would be cold. I wondered if what was already left in my tank would have expanded, as its parked in full sun and it's been over 31 C here last few days.

Go into cluster service or engineering mode:

Feet off pedals

press and hold ok

turn on ignition but do not start engine.

Scroll through needle sweep, bulb check etc etc etc

When you come to RAFE the next page will be RAFE adjustment, it should be on 900 to 1000 if it is not press OK then up and down to adjust and OK again.

Restart procedure to ensure it's saved.

Avg fuel and range will now adjust to suit
