My 2.0 tdci the other day started belt out black smoke etc , later found out it’s what’s called a run away diesel . 
I managed to stall car quite quick but now wondering is it turbo or do I need new engine

Who diagnosed a runaway diesel? From my understanding, this is a self destructive mode with no recovery as it just blows up! What other symptoms do you have apart from the pumping out of black smoke?

Fortunately it sounds as if the engine has been stopped before exploding!

This condition generally occurs when excess "fuel" enters from an abnormal source, e.g. lubricant getting into the system somehow.

Turbocharger failure is a possible suspect as damage to the internals can cause lubricant to enter the intake system.

 

Another thought - heard of this if the level in the sump was way too high, either from overfilling or a fuelling fault allowing excess fuel to get into the sump and raise the level.
