Cracked pipes - what are they?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

My mk3 mondeo 2.0 Duratec has just had the egr valve and the intercooler pipe changed (I was driving round with my own black cloud) and now it sounds like an old tank. I had the injectors overhauled in January so I don't think it's them but looking on top of the engine I noticed some cracked pipes leading to the injectors. They seem reluctant to pull off so I havn't pushed my luck. What are these pipes and could they be responsible for the now noisey engine?

Those are leak off pipes.  They really should've been changed when the injectors were done if they were in the same state then.

They can let air into the fuel system leading to a slow start etc but not convinced they could cause a loud noise.

Depending on which IC pipe was replaced, check that isn't touching the chassis anywhere as that can amplify the intake air sound.

Thanks Tom. That info about which IC pipe could be my problem. I had to do some twisting and turning to get the bottom of the pipe in place so I may have moved something. It just seemed odd that the noise started as soon as I changed the IC pipe. The injector work was done while in Spain and I have no faith in work out there (they even lost the engine cover).

That splitting is just on the outer sleeve of the leakoff pipes, which are a much more rigid plastic. btw it's a Duratorq you've got there not a Duratec
