Car ramps?

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I am looking into getting some car ramps to make servicing my car easier.

I was considering some plastic ones like these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/161914-2PCS-KATSU-Heavy-Duty-Plastic-Garage-Workshop-Car-Service-Ramps/283563935999?epid=4034589128&hash=item4205ba48ff:g:I4cAAOSwz71ZSA2l but was wondering if they are any good?

I have a red edition so was wondering if anyone has any experience with them to see if they hold up well, provide enough space to work and if they have any clearance issues?

My driveway also has a very slight incline which I am not sure if it would affect the ramps in any way by concentrating stress into certain areas.

Thanks for the help as usual!

Kieran

Personally I think they're pretty useless for anything other than oil changes. I can't think of many other jobs where I don't have to remove a wheel for one reason or another.

That's true, the main use for them was going to be for that very reason however I do already have jack stands. I think my main paranoia around those is there seems to be conflicting info of where is best to jack the car and then put the stands

Ramps don't really work with modern bumpers having so much over hang.  You can add extra wood to change the angle but by the time you've done that may as well have just used a jack.  Ramps are also really big and awkward to store.

I think this is a good idea

Those ramps in the ebay link would be fine to drive on to as they are a low profile, but as mentioned they wouldn't get the car high enough for much more than an oil change or other light work at the front or back. One thing to bear in mind is that they can slide on the ground depending on the surface, if your drive is steep then make sure you chock the wheels that are on the ground.

I've been using Fiamma caravan levelling ramps for about 18 years, bought them when I had my ST24, and primarily use them for oil changes and raising the car enough to get my trolley jack underneath. (it's a big trolley jack)

Race ramps are nice but on the expensive side.
