Visual Health Check - Doesn't seem right? Has it been done?

Featured Replies

Hello everyone.

Mrs has just had a service and Mot done with Ford. Thankfully this has passed. (Though did expect poss brakes may need doing as hasn't been serviced for 3.5years)

When they paperwork has come back. There is nothing in the 'Report & Recommendations' area!? (Previously on my focus, this has shown how many mm are left on front and rear brake pads.

Also the Tyres are all Amber and show 4.0 for Inner, Middle and Outer!? Surely this should have all different amounts. No way they could have all worn exactly the same??

I'd this normal? Or due to them already saying they were short staffed, have they just skipped everything?

Also still waiting for the Video Health Check that hasn't been sent, that O have had in the past.

It just feels rushed and doesn't tell us much for the cost we paid. Should we be worried or does this seem right?

Just go and measure them yourself and complain if the results are way off. It only takes 30 seconds.

The entire health check is a big con IMO, absolutely everything on the checklist is stuff the driver should be checking every so often anyway! The rest of it is covered under the MOT.

I will have to buy a tyre measuring device of Amazon to do this. I appreciate what you are saying, however not my car.

I tried visually looking at the breaks and couldn't see the thickness of them, that's why I though they were low. Plus on the disks they look a few mm worn in (though looks even) and the alloys was thick black with dust. So was thinking breaks would need doing or if not, I would have had the measurements to know how close to being done they were. Pads haven't been changed in 3.5 years and 20k miles since it was bought. The back are drums, so can't visually see the wear on them either.

I do know one of the back wheel nuts had a slight 1/8th movement on it, so I guess I can check to see if that is now tight, to know if they have had the wheels off or not? Would they usually always take the wheels off or check the torque on wheel nuts on a service and MOT?

Im not mechanically experienced, just going by the past MOT/Services I have had and they have always had a lot more detail.

Thanks I'm advance of any help.

The visual health check isn't a service.  It's literally just glancing over a few parts and taking a video.

Nothing is removed for MOT, wheels included.

Wheels are only removed at certain services to check brakes on the Ford schedule, not every one.

They probably have been lazy with the tyres and just probed one part of the tread on each one.  If wheels have previously been rotated, they could all be around 4mm now.  I'd also not expect pads to be worn out by 20k.

I've got a tyre depth checker, they're cheap as chips and worth having.

I've had tyres apparently regenerate from year to year -  4mm one year, back up to 6mm the next!😀

Thanks for the replies.

It was an MOT and Essential Service that was paid for. I was referring to the sheet that says 'Visual Healthcheck'

The 'Ford Essential Service's sheet, does say 'With wheels off, check brake pads and discs for wear' etc. That's why was surprised they didn't include how much pad was left. In the past on my Focus they have always given measurement.

Maybe being picky, due to Mrs dropping off and wondering if it was being lazy. I guess if I go check car tomorrow and that 1 locking nut is still loose, I can challenge if they have ever been done.

I will get a tyre gauge, just looked on Amazon and not very expensive, so useful to have.

Sorry bout the moan. Just comparing to all the ones I have had with Ford and have been given a lot more info. I suppose with it being Ford, it would be bad for them to skip over things and then sign off an MOT. Thanks for the replies.

Ah, fair enough, that makes more sense.  The essential service isn't part of the standard 'schedule' but you're right they should check front brakes with the wheels off.  I don't think drums are removed to check shoes so rear wheels may not have been removed.

I'd recommend an electronic tyre gauge.  Bit more expensive but much easier to read accurately.  The manual ones can be a bit difficult to get right.  (Reason I know this...I was given one on work experience at a main dealer 15 years ago...and got the first few wrong before the tech started double checking! )

Tyre tread all seems a bit subjective unless it's actually down to the legal minimum. On last year's MoT I had an advisory for tyres that were worn but still within the legal limit. This year: same tyres, not even a mention.

'Worn on edge' is a common advisory around here. I'm sure it must just be coincidence that they also happen to sell tyres and offer a tracking service... 🤔
