Tyres mystery!

Featured Replies

Hi,  I have a 2018 Mondeo 1.5l Ecoboost, bought new.  The tyres on it are 235.45/R18Y.  The handbook states clearly under tyre pressures that for up to 100 mph, the fronts should be 32 psi and the rears 32 psi.  Here's the mystery.  The metal plate by the driver's door where it gives you details for tyre pressures does not list the 1.5 Ecoboost.  It has 1.5D, 1.6D, 1.5 GTDI and lots of others, but not 1.5l Ecoboost.  Each time I've took it to a garage (including two Ford garages!) they tell me the front pressures should be 35psi, as listed on the metal plate for the 2.0 and 2.5 models.  When I point out the handbook specifically states 32 psi for my model, they all mumble and throw their hands in the air.  The reason this has come up now is after just 9,500 miles the original tyres (Continentals) are nearly bald.  So I'm wondering if I've made a mistake in sticking to what the handbook says, and that the pressures have always been too low, which has led to poor mileage, despite sensible driving.  Does anybody have any thoughts on it?  Thanks.

Everything I can see also say 32 front & rear. It is possible to get less than 10000miles from normal driving, some tyres are just poor wearing? I guess if you still have the tyres, to see if they have been underinflated you would see larger wear on the edges.

Low profile tyres wear a bit quicker than beefier ones too in my experience.  They tend to get scrubbed on corners and skip over rough surfaces whereas taller profiles mould into the road better.

3psi isn't likely to make a difference to wear rates, recommended PSI is designed for emissions and MPG figures.

Thanks for your answers guys.  After what you've said, I'll stick to the handbook figures and see how I get on with the new tyres I've just put on.

So long as the wear is even across the tyre, the pressure is likely fine. The difference between 32 and 35 is minimal though and they'll be much higher than this during driving when the tyres are warm.
