2005 1.4 TDCi not starting

Featured Replies

Hi all,

i have a 2005 fiesta 1.4 tdci.

last thursday i wanted to change the glow plugs, disconnected the fuel hoses at the top of the engine.

The second glow plug broke in, so i thought i leave it. Connected the fuel hoses back, pumped it up, and everything was fine, i went 3-4 miles with the car.

Friday i wanted to go, but didn't started. I tried to crank many times, pumped up the fuel, it started twice, but after 5 seconds, it died again. Then the battery died, so i went to recharge it.

On saturday i tried to start again, but nothing. Disconnected again the hoses if there might be some air, connected back, but nothing has changed.

When i start, i got 3 faliure codes:

P0191 - Fuel rail pressure sensor

P0336 - Crankshaft position sensor

P0380 - Glow plug(but this is old).

While starting the car i watched the fuel rail pressure:

It went up to 200+bar, then suddenly back to 20-30bar. Is it normal? Sometimes it was constant 200+bar, and that time i didn't get the P0191 message, but the car didn't started.

Then i checked the crank sensor, some diesel fuel was on the cable. It was repaired earlier, cause i saw shrink tube on of the wire. I cleaned the diesel, but still nothing happened.

My mechanic said he is not so familiar with this type of car, so he only can change the sensors, and suggested me to start with the crankshaft sensor. I think i'm only getting this faliure, cause the car is not starting, but i'm not sure. Is there someone, who had this type of problem before? Can on of the failure be because the car is not starting?

I wanted to measure my cables, but i haven't found a drawing to the ECU wiring. Can i find one somewhere?

And i wanted to measure the crankshaft hall sensor, but is it possible to measure it without supply? How much resistance should it be?

Thank You

I don’t know the answer to your  problems. But when the glow plug broke, did the threaded part come out?, if so, did you screw that part back in. If not I might be worried that when the engine is in use the remaining broken part might loosen and come out like a bullet.

I did screw back of course, i don't want a hole in my windscreen.

The next thing happened today: i tried to start the car, rail pressure was 200+bar, did not started, but no fault code.

Later i tried again, same.

Then later again and it started immediately, everithing was the same as before, and i let it run for 5-10 minutes, it was ok.

I stopped the engine, and a few seconds later tried again, no problem, everything was ok, no fault codes, no weird noises, so i stopped the engine.

About a half an hour later tried again, but it did not start, the rail pressure went down to 20-25 bar. First no fault code, but then i got the P0191 - Fuel rail pressure sensor code.

I deleted the fault code, the i got back P0336 - Crankshaft position sensor. My meachanic said this was maybe because of the backfire after so many starting attempt.

Why the rail pressure goes down? What can i do about it? I think this is the reason of the problem, but how to solve it?

I have changed the crankshaft position sensor. No difference. Still not starting. Tried about 3-4 times. Rail pressure was always about 24bar.

I would suspect that you have a problem with the high pressure fuel pump

Any update on this @geltam ?
